Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Amityville Memorial High School students are spreading joy to others this holiday season through the Christmas Magic program. In early December, they shopped at Target to fulfill holiday wishes for 74 children, then went back to the school and wrapped all the gifts. The program was spearheaded by the Warrior Awareness Program, known as the WAC PAC, under the direction of adviser Jason McGowan. Gifts will go to Christmas Magic, a nonprofit organization that distributes toys to

Lighthouse Mission was established in 1992 and exists to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor right here on Long Island; their motto is “Providing Hope Beyond The Food.” They are located in Bellport, and they have mobile food distribution sites across the island. Voice to Voice In an effort to inspire female students and give them the tools and confidence they need to succeed, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its first voice to voice empowerment session in the school’s library on December 7th. The mission of the new initiative is for women to empower each other

through conversation and teamwork. The program’s guest speaker was aDrena Mahoney – a Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School graduate and teacher at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and step team coach – who spoke about her upbringing, her education and her career

and life decisions. Following her speech, Mahoney answered questions from the students in attendance. Working together in teams, the students reflected on the lessons learned and shared their thoughts in a brief presentation with their peers.

AP Program Recognition The Amityville Union Free School District was honored by the College Board with placement on the eighth annual AP District Honor Roll. To be included on this list, a district had to increase the number of students participating in Advanced Placement courses while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Amityville Memorial High School offers more than 20 Advanced Placement courses in art, English, math, music, science, social studies and world languages. This year alone, five courses were added including AP research, human geography, European history, psychology and

computer science. All eighth-grade students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School are accelerated in math and science, which gives them the opportunity to take more higher-level courses in high school. “We have been steadily increasing the number of Advanced Placement courses offered at Amityville Memorial High School, which are rigorous and challenging,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly. “Participation in these courses prepares our students for collegelevel work and offers them the opportunity to earn college credits. The Board of Education and administration are committed to offering a rich program that prepares students for the demands of college and the work

place.” Participation in AP classes climbed from 122 students in the 20152016 school year to 222 students in the 2016-2017 school year. Amityville students took a total of 411 AP exams in 2017, a 51 percent increase from the previous year. The number of students scoring a 3 or higher grew by 55 percent. Amityville was one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada to be named to the AP District Honor Roll. Placement on the list indicates that a district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. It also shows that students among different subgroups are taking these exams and succeeding.

Sharing Stories First-graders in Katianne Howe’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated their writing accomplishments with a slumber party on December 8th.

Dressed in their coziest pajamas and armed with their fluffiest blankets, the students shared their personal narrative writings in small groups. Using just their flashlights, each student read their story to their group. After listening

to each author, the students told each other what they liked best about each story. They then rotated groups around the room until everyone had the chance to share stories.

Giving was the theme of the Holiday Family Learning Night at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on December 12th. Children participated in literacy and craft activities that benefitted others. The event was open to Northeast’s pre-K and kindergarten students, as well as parents, guardians, siblings and other family members. After playing bingo with holiday symbols and sight words, children then rotated through various stations in the gymnasium. They made cards and hot chocolate packages for troops in Africa and also colored in a banner that read “Happy

Holidays to our Heroes.” Additionally, the students wrapped presents for local families that the school has adopted for the holidays. “This is a night of giving in the season of giving,” said librarian Tina Smith. “All of the activities are about doing for others. At our school, we always talk about building good character.” Pastor Jeff Cole of Calvary Chapel of Hope in Amityville read “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” as children gathered around. That was followed by a visit from a special guest. Santa Claus arrived on a bicycle and took requests from eager girls and boys. At the stations, volunteers from the National Junior
