December’s Charity of the Month is:

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options case managers marvel at the hurdles overcome by each program participant and celebrate every accomplishment and achievement. Here is the story of one brave and amazing individual currently receiving Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Leslie was referred by her Care Coordinator to receive Options Home and Community Based Services, HCBS. Her history included abuse by people in authority and makes her shy when meeting new people and unsure about anything new or unfamiliar. Leslie and her husband have been married for several years and as they’ve aged, they have developed some health issues. With minimal cooking skills, Leslie wanted to be able to prepare healthy meals for herself and

her husband. Thanks to one-on-one assistance through Options HCB services, Leslie improved her cooking skills and is now filling up her recipe book with tasty, diabetes-friendly meals she can prepare on her own. Leslie’s symptoms caused her such distress that she rarely left her apartment unless accompanied by her husband or mother. Even though her mother lives only a half a mile from her home, she has not walked there independently in 3-years. Leslie was determined to overcome her fear so that she could live a more fulfilled life…..go to stores, visit family and take an art class. For months, Leslie worked to become more familiar with the walking route to her mom’s. She gradually grew more comfortable and walked with an Options employee until she was ready to take the walk on her own. Leslie completed her first solo trip to her mother’s home and her family celebrated her accomplishment! They were so impressed by her courage that they became more involved in helping her achieve other goals. Now, with the support of her family, Leslie is applying for a gym membership and plans to work with her Options HCBS provider on becoming more fit and healthy. Leslie is less fearful of her community. She has learned that each small step brings her closer to the life she wants for herself and her family. The Holidays are a time of hope, love, joy and reflection. It’s a time to slow down, put our routines on hold and spend time with family. By Patricia Scali of Bellmore, New York Nothing says The Holidays like dessert, and Patricia Scali’s family recipe for Red Devil Cake should add delicious festivity to your home this season! When Patricia and her two siblings were growing up, her late mom, Ethel Henry, began whipping up this delectable confection during World War II. When the war ended and the whole family was reunited, their Red Devil Cake tradition continued. Patricia’s mom, Ethel, baked this cake for the entire family as her three children were growing up. As Patricia recalls, “My father loved my mom’s famous Red Devil Cake, and so did all three of us kids. You’re going to love it!”

Combine: 2 cups of sugar 1/2 cup of shortening (preferably Crisco) 2 whole eggs 1/2 cup of baking chocolate/cocoa 2 1/2 cups of flour 1 tsp of baking soda 1 cup of water 1 tsp of vanilla extract Mix until smooth. Spread evenly into a glass 10x13 baking dish and bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cool, frost if desired and enjoy.

Copiague Science Researchers Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held a guest lecture for science research students in the library on Nov. 30. Organized by science teacher Tracy Wenzler and coordinated by science chairperson Renee Locker, guest lecturers Luke Gervase and Dr. Steve Pearson presented a seminar on invasive species to the group of more than 50 students. Gervase works with Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, while Dr. Pearson is part of the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area. After speaking about research, the two conducted a training on iMap, a website and software application used to track invasive species introductions and

spreads. Junior scienceresearchers Kiara Bennett and Nolan Johnson, who are part of the advanced science research program at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, are currently conducting research surrounding the effects of certain invasive species. Bennett has attained high honors in three local competitions. This year, she teamed up with Johnson to expand their research surrounding “The Effect of Helianthus angustifolius on the Invasive Species Eleocharis dulcis.” Bennett and Johnson were responsible for making initial contact with the Invasive Species Management program. In the advanced science research program, students

are taught a multiplicity of skills including conducting research, writing scholarly papers and networking. Under the supervision of Locker, in conjunction with advisers Wenzler and Minnett Hall, students reach out to professional experts in the field to authenticate and assist in the development of their research. According to Locker, who works with the research students alongside teachers, “This seminar is teaching students instructional enrichment, application and how to effectively utilize the superior district technology.” Consequently, Wenzler said, “It opens up an opportunity for them to pursue a popular area for research studies.”

Twenty-eight students enrolled in Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Peer Education Program met with their friends in the Amityville High School Warrior Awareness Club in mid-November for some fun and friendly activities. The purpose of the Cultural Diversity event is to build new friendships and create bonds between students from different

school districts. During the 2018-19 academic school year, both clubs will meet twice a year in order to continue to forge strong relationships and engage in positive team-building activities. After a complimentary breakfast, the students took part in a series of icebreaker activities to enable the groups to finding similar interests.

Each Bayport-Blue Point student was then paired up with an Amityville student and they attended classes together throughout the day before coming together again for a pizza lunch. Bayport-Blue Point High School will host Amityville High School in the spring for the second part of this biennial event.

Creating Future Coders The jobs that many elementary students will have don’t yet exist, but that didn’t stop youngsters from getting a head start on their futures at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. The school celebrated Computer Science Week from December 3-9 by having students participate in the Hour of Code during

their library periods. After a short introduction by librarian Timothy Quinn, children did coding activities on the KidOYO platform using laptops. Fourth- and fifthgraders did Maze Code, a leveled application in which students had to drag and drop directions to have a white arrow reach a green X. Each level got progressively harder. Although they

weren’t writing the code themselves, they were able to see it to gain an understanding of the work that goes into computer programming. Sixth-graders used Hatch, which gave them an introduction to the Scratch coding language in preparation for careers in the ever-growing field of programming.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
