six religions - Animism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism - by searching for clues. At the Animism table, students had to put together a puzzle that created an animal picture and had a secret message in invisible ink. For Buddhism, they had to identify the spread of the religion to open a directional lock. The clues were in English to help students improve their language proficiency. Once the class cracked the final code, they opened a box that had some reflection cards on the lesson, as well as a treat for

their hard work. “It’s a way to get students engaged in the content,” Ms. Beleckas said of the Breakout EDU kits, of which there are four at the high school. “The library is a nice place to do it, as it gives you space to work with.” She said that Breakout EDU kits could be used in any subject and for any topic. Supplies include number, letter, key and directional locks along with boxes, an invisible ink pen, black light and hint cards. Teachers can use pre-planned lessons or create their own, as she did for the world religions activity.

And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

Creating through Coding With a growing demand for computer programmers, the Amityville Union Free School District is giving its students a chance to explore career possibilities with lessons in coding. The district has introduced the kidOYO program, an online educational community

that delivers personalized project-based learning in computer science and engineering. Edmund W. Miles Middle School math teacher Dr. Linda Pfaffe has made this the focus of her seventh-grade STEAM class, a new elective that meets every other day. Throughout the year, students will learn five

different programming languages, including commonly used ones like Scratch and Python. They began by making simple video games in which the arrow keys control movement. Challenges will become tougher as the year progresses, and students move at their own pace. “ C o m p u t e r

programming is an essential skill for today’s students,” Dr. Pfaffe said. “In a world where the internet can satisfy almost any question in seconds, technical skills will enable them to succeed.” Dr. Pfaffe added that while many students are adept at using technology, they do not necessarily understand what makes it work. Coding is the logic and science that controls technology, and by learning to code students move from consumers to producers. She explained that programming is very literal and precise, which gives students a chance to develop their problemsolving skills. In addition to her own instruction, Dr. Pfaffe provides students with video tutorials on computer programming. KidOYO offers a moderated bulletin board so the youngsters can ask questions and share ideas. Much class time is devoted to independent inquiry in which students are thinking, collaborating, designing and refining. Seventhgrader Agin Shehu said he enjoys programming because it allows him to be creative and explore new ideas. He said he would consider a career in computer science and this class gives him a head start for the future.

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. elected officials welcomed members of the Babylon community to Town Hall recently to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. In addition to lighting the tree and Town Hall, several groups from the community attended to add to the festivities. A local school choir performed holiday songs along with marching bands as fire trucks passed through Town Hall with their lights and sirens in full effect. And, of course, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer and Santa Claus were in attendance to add to the festivities!

(NAPSI)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs. Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially. The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities. It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat

Students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District were able to increase their personal book collections thanks to the annual Free Book Fair in the library from November 29th through December 1st. Librarian Lynn Cesiro, who received donations from the Book Fairies and other organizations, organized the event. During their English language arts classes, students visited the library and were allowed to choose one book, which were separated by fiction and nonfiction, as well as by topic. There were also children’s books that they could choose from to bring home to younger siblings. The book fair also included a family night, which followed parentteacher conferences. On

Teddy Bear Clinic Kindergarten students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District played doctor to their stuffed animals thanks to the Teddy Bear Clinic sponsored by the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on November 28th. The hands-on program helps to ease the fear of doctors and hospitals and also teaches the students about injury prevention.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital representative Erin Zazzara first spoke to the classes about different safety tips, such as wearing a helmet during sporting activities, keeping safe in the car and always wearing a seatbelt. The students – who were dressed in their scrubs and equipped with their masks – then performed proper medical treatments on a “sick” stuffed animal or doll they had brought in

from home. After visiting the waiting room, they worked to diagnose their stuffed companions; first checking their weight and temperature before applying bandages and dispensing proper medicines based on their conditions. The students each performed different job functions, such as doctor, nurse, receptionist or pharmacist, throughout the workshop.

Run for Warriors

Hundreds of local runners recently took to the streets of the Town of Babylon to participate in the annual Run for the Warriors hosted by Councilman Tom Donnelly. Participants of all ages included veterans, their

loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances

(10K, 5K and 1 mile), by riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.
