The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org
In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. You can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. One way is by donating a toy to their Annual Toy & Fund Holiday Drive, going on now through December 22nd , (please visit www.jtcf.org for dropoff locations). You can also donate monetarily at www. jtcf.org or by mailing a check to John Theissen Children’s Foundation, 1881 Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793 to support their mission. District were challenged to replicate the parade floats and its route through the city. Working in small groups, students let their creativity shine as they designed balloons to replicate those that one would see along
the parade route. The next step was designing the parade route around Manhattan and using technology to move them. Coding their Ozobots, the floats lined up in formation and paraded around Santa Claus in the middle.

Kindergartners Feast And Give Thanks
Kindergartners learned about the true meaning of Thanksgiving, and also improved their literacy and math skills, during classroom activities at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. As kindergartners sat around the table in Renee Chandler’s classroom on Nov. 27, they discussed what they are thankful for before enjoying apple and pumpkin pie. Ms. Chandler also used it as an opportunity to teach her students about etiquette, noting that they shouldn’t start eating until everyone
had their slices of pie. Lisa Iannotta’s students gathered for a Thanksgiving feast with turkey and all of the trimmings, prepared by parents and staff. Before the meal, they disguised paper turkeys and wrote an accompanying story. Kindergartners in Maria Lievano’s bilingual class made handprint turkeys to accompany poems as a gift for their parents. In Spanish, the children wrote about their reasons for giving thanks this year. They also made a Thanksgiving-themed snack by using candy corn and candy eyes to make
turkeys out of chocolatefrosted cookies. Teacher Andrew Babington taught children about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Native American tribe, and how they came together to celebrate a successful corn harvest. Children then enjoyed a snack of corn muffins and grape juice. Turkey math in Nicole Faber’s room taught children all the different ways to make 10, while Dyan Aversa’s students honed their math skills by counting turkeys.
Students Share An Educational Day Students from BayportBlue Point High School’s Peer Education Program recently visited their peers enrolled in Amityville Memorial High School’s Warrior Awareness Club for an afternoon of collaborative activities and fun learning experiences. The students first engaged in a series of icebreaker activities among one another, sharing smiles and laughs during games such as “Link It
Up,” which had them finding common ground with their favorite colors and birthday months. Afterward, they took part in one of their favorite activities, a rock, paper, scissors tournament. Continuing with the day’s agenda, each of the 30 students from Bayport-Blue Point High School was paired with an Amityville student, and attended his or her buddy’s classes throughout
the course of the day to experience a day in the life as an AMHS student. Students reconvened at the end of the day to reflect on the experience, which was followed by a pizza lunch in the cafeteria. By the end of the day, it was clear that the students from Bayport-Blue Point High School are already looking forward to hosting their friends from Amityville High School this upcoming spring.

The floats of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade inspired a STEM activity in third grade classrooms at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Students in Adrienne Hartung’s and Julie Kirschen’s classes built models of parade floats with balloons. After reading “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet, watching video footage of the famed
parade and studying simple machines in science, students got to work on their projects. Working in groups, they brainstormed ideas and planned out their designs before building. In addition to balloons, the young engineers had plastic and wooden sticks to support their floats which had to rise above a flat cardboard surface. The task incorporated problem-solving strategies as children overcame
different challenges, such as the balloons popping when connecting the sticks, to successfully complete their floats. Completed floats included Mickey Mouse, a teddy bear, a snowman, an ice cream sundae and more. Ms. Hartung and Ms. Kirschen said that they were very impressed with the creativity of the students.
Technology is creating new ways for students in the Amityville Union Free School District to express themselves, and third graders at Northwest Elementary School recently got to add a digital component to their Thanksgiving research projects. Every student in Lori Heavey’s class completed a report on one of three topics: the first Thanksgiving, traditional Thanksgiving foods and harvest festivals around
the world. In addition to writing a paper, each child had to summarize his or her research for a short video. They used the Padcaster equipment, which included an iPad and holder, light, microphone, tripod and green screen background. The short videos were made on iMovie. Using green screen technology, each student could superimpose a picture related to his or her topic in the background. Ms. Heavey explained that
this activity was possible through the district’s Skin in the Game initiative, which included training for two of her students on the use of the equipment. Moise Desulme and Kirsten Lewis served as the directors, helping their classmates create the Thanksgiving videos. For an upcoming assignment, Ms. Heavey’s students will dabble in persuasive writing by crafting restaurant reviews, which will be accompanied by videos.
