Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District traveled around the world on November 29th as part of Microsoft’s annual two-day “Skype-aThon.” The event connects classrooms in more than 47 countries to showcase how technology can be used

to enhance the learning experience and promote global citizenship. The fifth-graders participated in a “Sing Around the World” activity with a class in Balatonboglár, Hungary. After exchanging greetings in English and Hungarian, Ms. Rosario’s class sang “The Star-Spangled

Banner.” Two Hungarian students performed solos of songs pertinent to their culture and the whole class sang their national anthem “Himnusz.” The Copiague students spoke about Thanksgiving and its meaning in the United States. The classes will reconnect for another session in January.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

to benefit Island Harvest. Thanks to donations from the entire school community, they collected enough to fill five boxes of goods for local families prior to Thanksgiving. For the Halloween season, the Builders Club

Flag Remembrance

2005. Throughout the day, County Executive Bellone was joined by representatives from various groups in each community to raise and lower an American flag at a designated landmark that is significant to the local veteran community.
