During an early Thanksgiving celebration at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, pre-K students took part in an apple-tasting contest. After reading “Bear Gives Thanks,” a book about sharing and friendship, they made apple cookies and apple pie. HARMONY CAFÉ!
Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony
Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Sponsors are needed to help support the mission of Harmony Café by helping to fund each event and, in return, they will have their business promoted by the Café. Veterans Awareness Week Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently welcomed local veterans, elected officials, students and others to Town Hall for the annual Veterans’ Awareness Week Kickoff Program. At the event, seven students from Copiague, Lindenhurst and West Babylon were recognized for their victorious submissions to
a veteran-themed essay contest. New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and Suffolk County Legislators DuWayne Gregory and Kevin McCaffrey were also in attendance, as well as representatives from American Legion Wayne Middleton Post #1839 and the Town of Babylon’s Veterans’ Advisory
and Steering Council Committees. The theme of this year’s essay contest was titled “My Hero: Write about a veteran you admire and why?” Each of the winners – who placed either first, second, third or as an honorable mention – received a gift card for their efforts.

Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

Honing Skills Student-musicians from Copiague School District’s elementary schools and Copiague Middle School participated in the Long Island Flute Festival held at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on November 18th. The Long Island Flute Festival is organized by the Long Island Flute Club and offers the opportunity to flutists of all ages to
participate in a day of performances, workshops and concerts. Copiague student-musicians had the chance to work on a solo piece at their level, rehearse music in an ensemble setting with students from other schools at their level, watch a concert given by world-renowned flutist Robert Dick, and perform their ensemble pieces as a group in a concert for their

Earning the prestigious black belt in taekwondo requires physical strength and coordination; but rooted deeply in the practice of this martial arts style is the development of the kinds of intangible skills and character traits that equal success off the mat, as well. At Ultimate Champions Taekwondo Copiague, Master Han and his staff are giving their students tools to better meet life’s challenges. On the physical side, the martial arts school, located at 903 Montauk Highway, is training students as young as 3 years-old in balance and motor skills while teaching focus,
self-control, self-respect, respect for others and discipline. Master Han, a fifth-degree black belt who has been practicing martial arts for years, has a talent for reading personalities and understanding the individual needs of his students and how to help them reach their potential. In addition to in-school training, students compete and participate in local demonstrations. In lateOctober, at the 2017 Champions Open state taekwondo tournament (one of the largest taekwondo events in NYS), they took home a collection of trophies and medals in such events as
sparring, wood breaking and form that would make their community proud, and in early-October, they showed off their skills for the crowd during an appearance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn before the start of the Nets vs. Knicks basketball game. The respect, dedication and hard work of these students, ages 3 to adult, are regularly on display at the school as they strive to achieve and be awarded their next belt. The progress from the start of the lesson to its end is nothing short of impressive.

Carnival for a Cause The Builders Club at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its first Carnival Night on November 17th. For a small admission fee, students received 10 carnival tickets which
