The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, honored its grant recipients during a recognition breakfast at the People’s United Bank Park Avenue branch, New York City, on Thursday, November 19th. Reason for the Season Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reﬂected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season

– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “ﬂawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room

for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important

because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

Thanks for Books In an effort to provide students with the resources to help foster a love for reading, Edmund W. Miles Middle School hosted its annual free book fair, with this year’s theme “Give Thanks for Books.” To gather books for the event, librarian Lynn

Amity Awareness More than 120 students and faculty members spent a total of 30 hours at Amityville Memorial High School for the school’s Awareness Weekend on November 13th-14th, an event designed to give participants an opportunity to learn about their peers and express themselves in a comfortable atmosphere. The weekend, organized by Jason McGowan and Barbara Lynch, kicked off on Friday afternoon with keynote speaker Jamel Hudson, who delivered a message of hope and inspiration realized through working hard, setting goals, taking a stand against bullying and never giving up. Later in the evening, four Amityville students shared their stories of adversity with the group and what

they did to overcome those hardships. “When my peers shared their stories Friday night, it made me realize that I am not alone” said junior Tianna Rookwood. During the program, students were put into “family groups,” where they talked about the guest speakers, participated in activities to get to know each other and performed skits to present to the rest of the group. “Being in family group with kids I wasn’t really close to gave me an opportunity to connect with people I never thought I would have anything in common with,” said senior John Jack. “When we left that Saturday night, I felt like we were a real family.” On Saturday morning, students enjoyed a

breakfast provided by the Amityville Parent-Teacher Council and listened to guest speaker Ann Marie Da’Liso who shared the story of her son’s suicide. As a former gang member, guest speaker Hashim Garrett spoke about his trials and tribulations, living life paralyzed from the waist down after being shot. He connected with the students, and his message of forgiveness resonated with the group. “I had one of the best weekends of my life and I was very sad when it was over,” said senior facilitator Jonas Archer. “I didn’t realize that spending 30 hours with my classmates and teachers could bring us as close as it did. I will remember this weekend for the rest of my life.”

Teaching Children In an effort to foster students’ abilities to develop sound spending and saving habits, fifth-grade students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in a financial literacy lesson led by representatives from Valley National Bank on November 19th-20th. During the lesson, fifth-

graders heard a story about twin brothers, one a “spender” and the other a “saver.” After listening to the story, students complete a worksheet that calculated how much each twin earned, saved and spent. Following the lesson, representatives answered students’ questions about their careers in the financial services industry and ways

to save money at a young age. Through the American Bankers Association’s Teach Children to Save Program, students receive an age-appropriate education lesson designed to meet educational standards in personal finance and reinforce concepts being taught in math, language arts and other disciplines.

In an effort to give students a true appreciation of Memorial Day and the sacrifices that families in our nation have made throughout history, Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District welcomed local veterans for its “Honor a Hero” day presentation on November 18th. The event, coordinated by fifth-grade teachers and teacher Danielle Palladino,

hosted local veterans, as well as family members who have served in the Armed Forces. During the celebration, students performed patriotic songs, read original essays and poems about Veterans Day, proudly waved American ﬂags to the playing of each military branch’s anthem, viewed a photo slideshow that highlighted the veterans in attendance during their years of service and participated

in a question-and-answer session with the veterans. On behalf of Assembly Woman Kimberly Jean Pierre, Kristi Reynolds presented the veterans with “Honor a Hero” award certificates. As a special treat for the fifth-grade students, two veterans spoke about their years of service and expressed their appreciation for the celebration held in all the veterans’ honor.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented Michael J. Sardiello of Copiague with a proclamation at his Eagle Scout Award Ceremony, held Friday, November 20th at Copiague Middle School. Michael is a member of Boy Scout Troop 284, based in Copiague. The Eagle Scout Award
