My Buddy occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. teams. He coached and refereed in the CYO Intramural Basketball program, volunteered at SSCM’s Family Festival, Breakfast with Santa and even worked in the kitchen during SSCM Bingo nights. Adding to his already busy schedule, Peter played Flag Football with the Knights of Columbus and baseball with Deer Park’s Little League Team. It’s no surprise that a young man who can juggle this much at once managed to earn an SSCM Parents Association Scholarship, the Ryan T. Horodnicki Memorial Scholarship, an SSCM Senior Club Scholarship and based on his performance on Co-Op testing, he claimed a St. John the Baptist Scholar Incentive Award. Ever grateful for his days at SSCM, Peter is now attending St. John the Baptist High School and we wish him every blessing for continued success!

It is called longterm care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care,

hospice care, adult daycare and other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing and nursing facilities.

The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.

She’s taken her talent and ambition with her to St. John the Baptist High School this fall, where she continues to excel, joining Orchestra, Pep Band, Speech Club and recently competed in SJB’s Speech Tournament, earning half qualification to attend the State Speech Tournament!

Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph reflected upon how SSCM had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting challenges

himself into a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Honor Band, Children’s Choir, Altar Service, Breakfast with Santa volunteers, holding leading roles in the school’s Drama Club and Shakespeare Festival performances and competing in SSCM’s Cross Country Team.
