Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. Students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about the three different states of matter during a hand-on interactive assembly on November 14th. The Franklin Institute’s Traveling Science Show

presented the “Hot and Cold” assembly, which featured demonstrations, and experiments that left the students wanting to learn more. The assembly challenged students’ ideas of what is hot and what is cold. Students were able to

visualize what happens to molecules in different states with fun experiments that included emerging a helium balloon, an ice cube and a rubber ball in liquid nitrogen, and predicting the outcome of each object.

a plan to borrow $26.7 million for police retirement pay. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory argued against the bonding, which would require state approval. “I believe there is little to be gained as it would be very unlikely that the state legislature would agree to this,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “It makes more sense to do it in house and resolve whatever the issues are through negotiations between the County Executive and the labor unions.” Presiding Officer Gregory said the county is prohibited from bonding for expenses that are part of the operating budget. Therefore, he included the costs for the retirement pay in a deferred salary line in the budget. Included in the omnibus bill is an increase in 2016 sales tax revenue from 0.85% to 1.16%, which equates to $4 million in 2016 and $4 million in 2017, and an increase in police district property taxes of $500,000, reflecting an increase of 3.986%. The bill also reduces property taxes in the Southwest Sewer District by 33%. Legislators increased funding for overtime in the Sheriff’s department by $2.4 million, increased revenue from the Motor Vehicle Registration Surcharge, which will generate an additional $2 million, and increased an administrative fee on moving violations from $30 to $60. Donation Received Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $30,000 grant from Paddlers for Humanity to support its Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC). This program advances

early recognition and identification of potential emotional disorders in children on Long Island’s South Fork through expanded screening initiatives and followup services for parents whose children have possible risk concerns. The CBHC creates a continuum of services

beginning with early identification of children with potential emotional disorders, interventions that rely on parent/family/school/ community involvement through supportive and educational programs. The continuum also includes care coordination and

treatment for those whose needs have progressed to more serious levels of emotional disturbance. Other CBHC services include: increased psychiatric and social work services in East Hampton and Southampton to include on-site services in both high schools and

increased clinic capacity, Mental Health First Aid Training to promote early identification through a network of trained community members, and workshops for residents, school faculty, and community professionals that will address children’s mental health issues.

Three students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in the Copiague School District took their love of social studies on the road this summer by participating in different fellowship programs. Thanks to a teacher recommendation, senior Claudia Motley was awarded a fully funded fellowship to the Japan Society’s Junior Fellows Leadership Program for three weeks in July. This culturally immersive experience allows fellows to research and experience

Japanese culture through a study trip to various important historical sites throughout Japan. Seniors Sophia Hall and Mikayla Angel both completed the Economics for Leaders program. Ms. Hall participated in the program at College of William and Mary in Virginia and Ms. Angel traveled to Florida for the fellowship. EFL is a selective summer program that teaches leaders how to integrate economics into the process of decisionmaking in a hands-on, experiential environment.

Its goal is to provide students with the skills to be more effective leaders and teach them how to employ economic analysis when considering difficult public policy choices. Additionally, Ms. Hall completed a fellowship at the Student Leadership Academy in New Orleans. The academy takes students through the history of World War II with the aim of exploring leadership lessons by relating them back to their own lives and the world around them.

The gymnasium walls of Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District were adorned with red poppies, American flags and notes of thanks created by the fifth-graders during the “Honor A Hero” ceremony on November 9th. In recognition of their service to the country and the sacrifices they have made, the school welcomed community veterans and

family member of students. Kicking off the ceremony, the fifth-graders paraded in with “When the Saints Go Marching In” and the “Marines’ Hymn.” Fifth-graders recited an acrostic poem, spelling out “veteran.” Students took to the podium to express their gratitude to the veterans in attendance. Fifthgrade teachers created a slideshow presentation that offered a glimpse into

each veteran’s years in the U.S. military. The veterans were each presented with an “Honor A Hero” certificate and several veterans spoke about their time in the armed forces and what it meant to them. Students had the opportunity to end the program with a question-and-answer session with veterans.

faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients were provided by the Dominican Sisters - more than a dozen, 20-pound turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 18 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy - more than 5 gallons of it!
