Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its first “Take A Vet to School Day” on November 10th. Paying It Forward

Three years ago this October, Super Storm Sandy caused unprecedented devastation and disruption to many lives and businesses on the south shore of Long Island. Only weeks ago in this same month historical level rains and broken dams far from the shore line caused flooding to residents and businesses all over the state of South Carolina. Local business owner and Amityville resident, Joanne Mills of Exit Family Realty in Lindenhurst was compelled to do something. “When I saw the news reports coming out of South Carolina, I knew that these people where just beginning a traumatic journey that many of us here on Long Island still are going through after three long years.” Joanne said when asked what made her get involved. Joanne and her agents reached out to the Real Estate and local community for donations to send to Columbia, South Carolina. Once a donation of the use of a

truck from Lloyd Gutin owner of 1-800 Got Junk in Masapequa, was offered, the plan was made for a “Stuff a Truck” event and a trip down to Columbia. “The outpouring of support from everyone was amazing. So many people were helped by strangers in our time of need after Sandy; it felt great to Pay it Forward.” Joanne said. On Monday November 2nd, after a 16-hour drive Joanne and her associate Barbara Schaffer met up with 3 local Exit Real Estate Brokers and their agents at the Palmetto Project Community Flood Hub in Columbia and unloaded a truck full of donations. They also presented “Stars of Hope” created and decorated by children from Long Island who had lived through the aftermath of Sandy themselves. “It was a long drive there and back, but it was worth it for the opportunity to Pay it Forward. When Sandy happened here to all of us, strangers from around the country took the time to step up and give, it was our opportunity to do that now,” said Joanne.

This Amityville Union Free School District is proud to announce that the artwork of Amityville Memorial High School senior Jeoprey Delos Santos and junior Kenyi Zelaya was selected to be displayed in a statewide student art exhibit during the New York State

School Boards Association Conference at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel from October 18th20th. The exhibit, cosponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association and New York State School Boards Association, was

established as a way to highlight student achievement in visual arts across the state. The exhibit demonstrates a high level of student ability on every grade level in a range of mediums, techniques and genres.

Stache of Good Books During the school’s literacy night on November 4th, students in grades 3-5 at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned that reading could be fun when surrounded by friends and a ‘stache’ of good books to read. Students arrived to the event dressed in their

pajamas and brought along a few of their favorite books. Following the theme “Keep Calm and Read On,” students received a bookmark-timer to help build their reading stamina and challenge them to read for longer periods of time. At the end of the evening, teachers distributed “My Stache of Books” bags filled

with literary goodies such as a bookmark, pencil, a “Keep Calm and Read On” bracelet and books for the students to take home. “We host literacy nights to help foster the partnership between families and the school,” said literacy night coordinator Nicole Giannini.

On November 6th, students enjoyed listening to professionals including Legislature DuWayne Gregory, an architect, a major league soccer player, police officers, a nursing manager, News 12 videographer, radio personality from 106.1 BLI, pharmacists and financial consultants. PAMES Career Day was designed to offer students information and the requirements needed

to pursue future careers. Veterans Day Ceremony Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, third from right, welcomed members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard, the Patriot Guard, veterans and active duty military to the College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden on Monday November 9th for the College’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The Bristal Assisted Living communities sponsored the play “A Piece of My Heart,” performed professionally at the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village

Restoration. The play presented a powerful, true drama of five nurses who staffed field hospitals during the Vietnam War. Named “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The

Vietnam Vets Association, “A Piece of My Heart” focuses on the role of women during the war, and seeks to pay tribute to the nearly 11,000 women in uniform who served incountry during that time.

80 year-old Ann Berg, a resident of The Bristal at East Northport, and a former Bellmore resident said, “The acting was amazing, and the experiences of these young women were heart wrenching and unforgettable.” Jan Burman, President of The Engel Burman Group, developers and operators of The Bristal Assisted Living communities, said “For many who served in Vietnam, the experience is as much an emotional presence for them today as it was fifty years ago. We believe we have a responsibility to present this play as it reminds

all of us of the enormous burdens our veterans continue to bear in the defense of our nation.” Steven Krieger, a Partner at The Engel Burman Group added, “These women completed their tours of duty under enormously difficult circumstances and with little recognition.
