Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

Apprentice Challenge Members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in the Copiague School District competed in the Adelphi University Apprentice Challenge on November 6th.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Katherine Abreu, Jennifer Diaz, Nicholas Hernandez, Sheree Hicks, Cameren Jackson and Sarah St. Jean competed against 240 students from 27 different school

districts. The challenge of this business simulation was to determine who could create the best subscription-based business geared toward teenagers. Four Copiague School District students made it to the finals round.

Chinese Auction a Success

Dominican Village of Amityville recently held its 10th annual Chinese Auction On October 7th. The event was a huge success raising over $30,000. They gratefully acknowledge that this night could not have been possible without the generosity of their sponsors, family members and their local business friends who understand the importance of the care and support that they

provide for residents. The net proceeds from this year’s Extravaganza exceeded last year’s by an incredible 75%! Such a jump is clearly attributed to the quality of the items that were available to those in attendance that evening. Everyone’s support was a significant part of that success and will enable Dominican Village to purchase an innovative sound system with wireless headsets for the Helen Butler Hall. This state of

the art equipment will now allow aging residents to become fully engaged when participating in events at Helen Butler Hall. The staff of Dominican Village is passionately committed to making a difference in the lives of our residents by providing services of the highest quality in an environment which promotes socialization, good health, and independent choices.

Caring for Canines Copiague Middle School’s Home and Careers Club members are working hard to brighten the day of shelter puppies waiting for their adoptive families. Using recycled T-shirts that are cut into strips and braided, the students

are making tug toys for the dogs at the Attleboro Animal Shelter. With the help of Copiague Middle School technology teacher Stephen DiGiorgio, who drilled holes through the center of 18 tennis balls,

the students are testing out their toys to make sure they hold up to dog’s tugging. Copiague Middle School science teacher Jennifer Palazzo will deliver the tug toys to the shelter upon completion.

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
