There are few things more frightening for a family than discovering that a loved one with a cognitive disorder has wandered away from home. As the hours go by, the hopes of finding these individuals start to dwindle. And, even if they are found, there is an increased risk of them straying once again. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has been working with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office in dealing with wandering adults with dementia as part of the Project Lifesaver program. A non-profit organization, Project Lifesaver aims to increase the location and recovery rate for those who wander off due to Alzheimer’s, dementia, Down syndrome, autism and other related cognitive
conditions. Accomplishing this in a timely fashion not only reduces the possibility of injury, but has proven to be life-saving. To further the agency’s efforts, ADRC has provided informative palm cards to help officers on patrol determine whether a person they’ve located is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office has since provided these cards to other law enforcement agencies on Long Island. “When we do these presentations with the Sheriff’s Office, they always request the palm card,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “They use them extensively, and so do we.” This relationship began in March when ADRC

Subsequent to the Conference, Joan Motley, Outreach Coordinator for ADRC, invited the Sheriff’s representatives to speak at ADRC’s Caregiver Support Groups. The Sheriff’s Office conducted six presentations at ADRC’s caregiver support groups, which resulted in many families enrolling their loved ones in the program. ADRC has offered a courtesy table to the Sheriff’s Office at the West End Walk, which was held in August, where attendees learned about the importance of the Project Lifesaver program. All too often, we see tragic stories of those with cognitive disorders who wander and aren’t found in time. Our program brings tremendous peace of mind to these families. The Sheriff’s Office is just a phone call away, and we will bring them home.” Sheriff Vincent DeMarco was appointed by Project Lifesaver International as the Downstate New York State Coordinator. Prior to the Copiague Board of Education meeting on October 26th, a special ceremony was held to honor Board members for their dedicated service to the Copiague Public Schools and community. Every year, New York State reserves one week in October to recognize school board members. School Board Recognition Week serves as an opportunity for faculty members, students, and community residents to acknowledge and thank their Board of Education members. During the honoring ceremony, members of the Copiague Middle School Chamber Chorus, under the direction of Kaitlin Schneekloth, entertained the crowd by performing two musical selections. In addition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon presented an art piece created by members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School National Art Honor Society, depicting the Copiague Eagle mascot watering a garden of flowers. In her address, Dr. Bannon praised the Board for their commitment to the students of Copiague. “We know how much you do for the community and students of the community,” Dr. Bannon said. “Following my motto, ‘If it’s good for kids, it’s good,’ we see you live that everyday with everything that you do and are involved in. We very much appreciate

For the past several years, Great Neck Road Elementary School has offered a mentorship program, which pairs a staff member with a student in third-, fourthor fifth-grader who could use a special friend or positive role model in his or her life. This year, the program kicked off with a special luncheon event on October 23rd. Coordinated by social worker Lissette Persico, guidance counselor Adrienne Mahoney
and fifth-grade teacher Margaret Murphy, 32 students were coupled with a staff member who volunteered to participate in the program for the entire school year. As a mentor, faculty members work to build a supportive relationship with their mentee and meet once a week for approximately 30-minutes. In addition to being a positive role model, the mentor can also help the student solve a problem, handle a situation or
encourage college and career exploration. In most cases, students will keep the same mentor throughout their educational careers at Great Neck Road. During the luncheon, mentors and mentee completed a Halloween sticker activity and enjoyed a variety of food and snacks. “The program provides many positive experiences for the students and boosts their self-confidence,” said Persico.

In honor of Victoria Trachte, a former Copiague student who lost her battle against Lymphoma this past summer, the Copiague Middle School S.A.D.D. club (School Students Against Destructive Decisions) held a fundraiser on October 22nd to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
As part of the fundraising event, members of the S.A.D.D. club, along with advisor Marisa Perlongo, sold strands of duck-tape for $1 or $2, which were used to tape Copiague Middle School Assistant Principal Stephanie Valeiko to the wall. In addition to successfully taping Valeiko to the wall
using only duck-tape, the club raised and donated $400 to the society in memory of Victoria. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, founded in 1949, is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community
happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -
we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

Run Against Drugs In conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, students in Deauville Garden West Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the school’s Run Against Drugs on October 28th.
Leading up to the run, students in kindergarten through fifth grade learned about the importance of making healthy choices and the negative effects of drugs and alcohol during their physical education
classes. Following the quarter-mile run, students signed the Run Against Drugs banner and received a Red Ribbon Week-themed pencil provided by the PTA.

Miscellaneous Services
In recognition of National Red Ribbon Week, members of the Copiague Middle School S.A.D.D. club (Students Against Destructive Decisions) decorated the trees in front of the school building with red ribbons and encouraged their fellow classmates to take the pledge to live a safe, healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
During lunch periods, middle school students took part in the Red Ribbon campaign by signing the pledge to live a drug-free life. Assisted by advisor Marisa Perlongo, members of the S.A.D.D. club hung students’ pledges in the hallways as well as posters to create awareness about the problems related to drug abuse and the

importance of making healthy choices. Students who took the pledge received a “stay drug free” pencil provided by the middle school Builders Club. Additionally, students and teachers wore red ribbons during the week in support of the campaign.
In an effort to promote positive character education within the Copiague Public Schools community, students in the advanced drama class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School presented the fifth annual “Kids are the Spotlight” show for students at Great Neck Road Elementary School.
