Top 10 In The Class Of 2022 Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School has announced the top 10 students for the Class of 2022. With a weighted GPA of 104.44, Joseph Falco has been named the valedictorian. Devonie Rhoden has been named

(third); Stephanie Cortes (fourth); Jillian McLaurin (fifth); Cathrine Sakin (sixth); Adriana Jimenez Bonilla (seventh); Asiatul Hoque (eighth); Deep Shah (ninth); and Roman Burrus (10th).

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Whether you’re a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for you to sign up for a class offered at Project 9 Line. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression ﬁlled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

Copiague Captures Community Spirit At Homecoming

The Copiague community came out in full force to celebrate the district’s homecoming on Oct. 16. Kicking off with spirit week activities and a pep rally at the high school on Friday, students and staff were beaming with school pride in the days leading up to the big game. Gathering for the parade at Great Neck Road Elementary School, school and community organizations came together to march to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Members of the homecoming court marched together alongside community and school organizations including the Susan E. Wiley student council and students from Copiague Middle School and Great Neck Road, Deauville

Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools. The freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes showed off their creativity with different superherothemed floats. The freshman class took home the first place win for their real-life superhero design. Back at Walter G. O’Connell High School, the Copiague Eagles took the field against the Newfield Wolverines. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles couldn’t come out with the homecoming win. The varsity cheerleaders and step team entertained the crowds during the halftime show. The homecoming court from each grade – including senior royalty Larisa Gutierrez and Johnell

Hankerson – were formally announced and recognized in front of the Eagle’s Nest. Later that evening, the district held its annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony, recognizing eight alumni who have made positive contributions to both their community and school district. This year’s inductees were: Brenda Bryant, Class of 1980; Michael Hodgson, Class of 1979; Henry Jackson Jr., Class of 2007; Dominick Nuzzi, Class of 1992; Christopher O’Connell, Class of 1972; Dr. Jessica Royce, Class of 2009; Dennis Scully Jr., Class of 1989; and Dr. Ewa Stelmach, Class of 2005. COPIAGUE MARCHING BAND TAKES FIFTH IN SYRACUSE - The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School marching band ended their season with a fifth place performance at the Syracuse Carrier Dome on Oct. 31. The band scored an 80.95, their highest score in the past nine years. “It’s been a long road to bring the activity back this year, but it’s been so worth it to share this moment with these kids now,” said band director Eric Dobmeier. “Students overcame the challenges from the past year and even with the adjusted season, they were happy just to participate once again in marching band.” Photo courtesy of Copiague School District
