Options for Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have received a $25,000 grant from the M•A•C AIDS Fund. Options has developed programs that provide housing assistance and long-term rental housing for individuals and families in response to the critical need for affordable housing for persons living with HIV/ AIDS on Long Island. Options currently operates 68 units across Long Island that provide safe, affordable housing to Long Islanders who were formerly homeless or inadequately housed. Options requested program support from the M•A•C AIDS Fund to supplement funding for housing case management services. These services are vital to evaluate home safety; to assist tenants with budgeting and to provide referrals for health services as needed.

The mission of the M·A·C AIDS Fund is to serve all people affected by HIV and AIDS. Their goal is: “to partner with the bold, the visionary and the brave who confront the epidemic in countries and communities where people are most neglected, off the radar and at highest risk. M A C funds innovative programs that deal directly with the most marginalized, stigmatized and under-heard victims.” Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living, Inc., is grateful for the M·A·C AIDS Fund support. “Our housing program has allowed us to keep families together and to ensure that individuals have safe, affordable housing where they can ﬂourish. Hundreds of law enforcement experts from across the nation gathered at the Upsky Long Island Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 20th, for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s 10th annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco organizes the event each year in conjunction with the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. The County Sheriff has made partnering with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies a priority of his Administration and he says the Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar gives officials the opportunity to share information on current trends and improve collaboration. Highlights of this year’s event focused on security in the Brentwood School District in the wake of the high profile murders of two students, and others, by suspected gang members, as well as the scope of the gang problem in Long Island’s suburbs. DeMarco stated, “Coordination and intelligence sharing are keys to combatting gangs. Gangs recognize no boundaries, and neither should we in law enforcement. Our willingness and ability to share gang-related investigative leads is one of the most effective ways we can work together to defeat street gangs, and this annual conference gives us the opportunity to strengthen our networks and build relationships.”

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) held its 36th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $286,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 150 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock in Locust Valley where 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: Presenting Sponsor the Christopher D. He spoke of the critical needs of youth and families on Long Island and the services that LICADD offers to address the growing crisis of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. “The support of our event chairs, Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman. “It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.”

According to project director Andrew Malekoff, families who are seeking community-based mental health or substance abuse care for their children are struggling to get it in a timely manner; access delayed is access denied.” Project Access was developed in response to the issues of parity and network adequacy within our health system. The Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008 require that health insurance carriers meet Federal coverage standards on par with other medical benefits. Network adequacy refers to a health insurance carrier’s requirement to provide enrollees with timely access to a sufficient number of providers included in their benefit contract. Project Access will investigate the problem of families gaining timely and affordable mental health and addictions care, identify obstacles to accessing timely care, and disseminate findings to activate change. These activities will be executed by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIU-C.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy. Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District is celebrating its students and their positive choices with a month of activities centered around Red Ribbon Week. During the week of October 24th, each student pledged to say no to drugs

by writing their names along with a positive/ healthy message on an eagle cutout. Students placed their individuals eagles on a poster in the hallway with the message “We can all soar like Copiague Eagles if we say no to drugs.” Students “ran against

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a ﬂood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood ﬂoor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Renewed Efforts Copiague Middle School’s Home and Careers Club and Student Council started the new school year with renewed

community service efforts. The two clubs joined forces to collect nonperishable food items and household supplies for the Hurricane

Matthew victims in North Carolina. From October 13th to 21st, the students in both clubs sorted and packed

seven boxes for shipping. Thanks to the generosity of the Cpl. Kyle Carpenter Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets in Farmingdale, which paid for the shipping

costs, the donations will immediately be dispersed to those in need at the VFW Post Master Pacheco in the USNSCC in Raeford, North Carolina, a town devastated

by the hurricane. Students also wrote letters and notes of encouragement to be packaged with the boxes for the hurricane victims.
