Water Distribution Projects In Babylon Set To Improve Reliability

The Suffolk County Water Authority announced that four projects have been completed in October to improve the distribution of drinking water in the town of Babylon. The slew of projects replaced water mains that were prone to breaks or undersized. New ductile iron, PVC and copper water main that is appropriately sized for the areas will

ensure that customers have reliable service of highquality drinking water, and a robust network of hydrants are available for fire protection. These projects are part of SCWA’s long term plan to address aging infrastructure in its drinking water network. “Our customers expect that when they turn on the tap there will be a strong

supply of clean drinking water to their home. It’s our mission to make sure that is always the case,” said SCWA Chairman Charles Lefkowitz. “By being proactive, identifying problem areas and addressing them before there is an issue, we are making sure that we can deliver on that promise.” In Amityville, approximately 2,000 feet

of old water main with low flow on Grand Central Avenue Court was replaced with new PVC water main. To the north on Nathanial Avenue, about 300 feet of undersized cast iron water main was replaced with larger ductile iron main. Another 200 feet of old cast iron water main with low flow on Kensington Court in Copiague was replaced with

new copper water main. Finally, in Lindenhurst, approximately 500 feet of cast iron water main that was prone to frequent water main breaks on Schley Avenue was replaced with new PVC water main. The flexibility of PVC makes it better suited for the local geology and will reduce the likelihood of future main breaks.
