Heritage Rhythms “It is with a lot of pride that I welcome you because I could not be more proud of my culture along with all the traditions and values I grew up with,” said Mr. Todisco. “It is wonderful to celebrate my culture and all the other cultures with you here tonight.” Coordinator and secondgrade teacher Melissa Asbell introduced guest presenter Alfred Pena, founder of social Latin dance studio “Rhythmology.” In his presentation, Pena shared the history of the salsa, mambo and bachata and
demonstrated the different movements and rhythms of each dance style. Parents and students were welcomed to dance along with Pena as he led the group in simple bachata dance movements. The event continued with a taste of traditional Hispanic cuisines served by staff and members of the National Junior Honor Society. The dinner featured a variety of foods and desserts including rice, empanadas, quesadillas and coconut bread pudding.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage event on October 13th. During the evening, students and their family enjoyed music, dancing, artwork and food that celebrate the Hispanic culture. To kick off the event, Principal Vincent Todisco offered words of welcome and expressed the pride he possesses for his heritage.

Bond Forum Set Residents of the Copiague School District will have an opportunity to vote on a capital project bond referendum on Monday, November 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Great Neck Road Elementary School. All community residents are invited to attend an informative bond forum on Wednesday, October 28th, starting at 7 p.m. in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School cafeteria. After listening to the community’s comments and concerns about the conditions of the district’s schools and the need to minimize the cost of a bond to the community, the Board of Education and administration carefully prioritized the scope of work and implemented additional funding options not previously available before finalizing the work included in the proposed bond referendum. The district will also receive 75.2 percent in New York State Building Aid, which will further reduce the cost to taxpayers. It was decided that two propositions be established in order to give the community a greater
voice in deciding the future of the Copiague School District. If both Proposition #1 and Proposition #2 are approved the cost to the average household will be approximately 49¢ per day or $178.19 per year. Taxpayers will spend approximately $16.5 million for more than

Fourth-graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in a two-session multimedia workshop designed to promote empathy and build social skills and assertiveness when interacting with
classmates and dealing with conflict resolution. Child Abuse Prevention Services, a nonprofit organization, presented the program in recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month. During the lessons, CAPS representatives engaged the students in discussions
and stories aimed at teaching kids to steer clear of bullying. In addition to hands-on activities, the presenters used the classroom Smart Boards and played an anti-bullying DVD for the fourth-grade classes.

The Suffolk County Office for the Aging’s Fall 2015 Senior Advocate Schedule has been released. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out to the local community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. Senior Advocates meet with interested seniors aged 60 and over at regularly-scheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these
late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will
greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Student Spotlight THE LITTLE THINGS SUBMITTED BY: SOFIA PAPASTAVROU, AGE 16, HHH HIGH SCHOOL WEST Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people
have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.
In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over. law for drivers under 21 who are caught driving while intoxicated and Leandra’s Law, driving under the influence with a minor in the car. Following his informative discussion, Deputy Sheriff Thomas P. Indence coached the students as they drove through a cone maze while pedaling a cart and wearing goggles that simulated driving while impaired. Each cone represented a human being, and hitting a cone meant a person had been injured or killed as a result of the student’s choice to “drive” while impaired.

STOPPED In the beginning of the school year, more than 30 students enrolled in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School driver education program led by instructor Karen Perrone. In recognition of the program’s teen driving distraction week, students received a hands-on lesson on the dangers of driving while intoxicated provided by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office STOPPED community program. During the lesson, the teen drivers learned about New York State’s zero tolerance
The students also participated in the “real life college experience” activity where they walked side-byside in pairs through the cone maze while wearing the impaired goggles. Once one of the students touched a cone, they were considered “hit” by a vehicle. “I like to bring this program to the drivers education students because it provides a safe environment on how it feels to be drunk and the dangers of driving while intoxicated,” STOPPED - Students in the Walter G. Alumni Achievements the Hall of Achievement during a special ceremony. “This year’s inductees like those before them are outstanding individuals,” said Board President Brain J. Sales. connected in a variety of ways to our schools and our students,” said Dr. Bannon. “By the nature of their accomplishments and service, inductees to the Hall of Achievement inspire our students to reach high goals.” This year’s honorees included Ryan J. W. Kuhn, Class of 2003; Ofrona A. Reid, Jr., M.D., Class of 1989; and Scott C. Sattler, Class of 1983. The evening concluded with the unveiling of the wall that holds the Hall of Achievement plaques prominently displayed in the main hallway of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Eagle Pride Soars Eagle pride soared this year as members of the Copiague community, students, faculty and administrators in the Copiague School District united for the district’s homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 17th. Students and staff at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School kicked off the celebration earlier in the week by participating in Spirit Week leading up to Friday afternoon’s pep rally. Spirits remained high the following day as the homecoming parade, beaming blue and white, made its way down Great Neck Road and Dixon Avenue. The parade, led by members of the Board of Education
and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon, featured the high school marching band, cheerleaders, lady steppers, homecoming court, class floats, various school clubs and for the first time, students and administrators from each of the district’s four elementary schools, making it a true district wide celebration. Designed around the theme of “Once Upon a Time an Eagle’s Story,” the seniors’ float represented Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” the juniors depicted Disney World, the sophomores’ float displayed “Little Red Riding Hood” and the freshmen, “Scooby-Doo.” Prior to the homecoming
football game, attendees enjoyed the Booster Clubsponsored Fair, which included student and PTArun booths, music for dancing, games and food. At 2 p.m., the Copiague high school varsity football team took on North Babylon and despite their best efforts, the Copiague Eagles fell short of a homecoming victory. During halftime, members of the homecoming court were announced and the crowd enjoyed performances by the marching band, cheerleaders and lady steppers. The day’s festivities concluded with the annual celebration of alumni at the Hall of Achievement induction ceremony.
