The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative has exceeded its goal, raising the equivalent of 21,944 meals – nearly a thousand more meals than its 21,000-meal objective. Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Copiague Appoints New Director Of Guidance Copiague School District appointed Sabrina Meehan director of guidance, effective July 1. Ms. Meehan replaces James McCabe who now serves as the assistant superintendent for student services for the district. Prior to coming to Copiague, Ms. Meehan served as the supervisor of counseling services in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District since 2016. She previously worked was the director of SABRINA MEEHAN guidance and counseling programs in the South School. Country School District Ms. Meehan holds and as a school counselor a bachelor’s degree in at Harborfields High psychology from Hofstra

University. She holds a master’s degree in school counseling and an advanced graduate certificate from LIU Post. “I am honored to serve as the director of guidance in the Copiague School District and look forward to working closely with the talented K-12 staff, students and families within our schools,” Ms. Meehan said. “It is clear during my first few months in this role that the focus of the district is to provide each and every student with the tools and support needed to achieve excellence within our schools and beyond.”

COPIAGUE HOSTS TOURNAMENT OF BANDS - On Sept. 26, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted the Tournament of Bands for the first time in two years. The day saw 13 bands returning to competition including: Copiague, Walt Whitman, Division Avenue, Lindenhurst, Roslyn, Mineola, Brentwood, Hicksville, Sachem, Malverne, Huntington, Midland Park and Floral Park high schools. The event attracted more than 1,000 people and was a great sense of pride for the district and community. “It was so great to be making music again with these kids; we’re so excited for the season ahead,” said Walter G. Eight New Inductees Join Copiague’s Hall Of Achievement Copiague School District celebrated its 24th annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony by recognizing alumni who have made a positive impact on the school and community. Invited guests and honorees gathered in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School cafeteria following the homecoming festivities on Oct. 16. Since there was no ceremony last year, the district inducted both the 2020 and 2021 members together. The eight new inductees – which brings the total number to 113 – are: Brenda Bryant, Class of 1980; Michael Hodgson, Class of 1979; Henry Jackson Jr., Class of 2007; Dominick Nuzzi, Class of 1992; Christopher O’Connell, Class of 1972; Dr. Jessica Royce, Class of 2009; Dennis Scully Jr., Class of 1989; and Dr. Ewa Stelmach, Class of 2005. “This year’s inductees, like those before them, are outstanding individuals, each of them have many memories of growing up in Copiague and going through our school system,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. “They have continued the tradition of Eagle pride throughout their lives and careers.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon welcomed administrators, board of education members and guests and honorees to the ceremony. “In honoring successful past graduates of Copiague School District, the Hall of Achievement’s primary purpose is to introduce these alumni as positive and motivating role models to our entire school community,” she said. “We keep these role models connected in a variety of ways to our schools and students. By the nature of their accomplishments and service, the inductees of the Hall of Achievement inspire our students to

reach for high goals. As students of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School pass through our main hallway and the Hall of Achievement every day, they can stop and read about the accomplishments of our inductees.” Ms. Bryant became a New York City parole officer following her graduation from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. From December 1998 to 2021, Ms. Bryant worked as a security guard with the Copiague School District. She enjoyed speaking to students about her work history and her experiences in Copiague. After graduation, Mr. Hodgson attended Hudson Valley College and eventually entered the U.S. Air Force, training to be an NFPA certified firefighter. After serving for 20 years, he retired as an active duty technical sergeant. He currently served as an assistant/battalion fire chief at Dobbins Air Force Base in Georgia. Mr. Jackson attended SUNY Old Westbury, receiving a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. After spending time as an emergency medical services volunteer, he found a passion for dentistry. He was accepted into the New York University College of Dentistry and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He continued his post-graduate clinical training at the Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn. Mr. Nuzzi continues to serve the Copiague community where he was raised. He attended college at both SUNY Farmingdale and New York Institute of Technology, where he studied advertising art and design and art education. His desire to serve humanity lead him to volunteer with the Copiague Fire Department and eventually join the FDNY. He currently serves as the chief of the Copiague

Fire Department. Mr. O’Connell has remained closely tied to the Copiague community and has assisted at a variety of events in the community and the high school. After graduation, he went on to work at CBS TV in their engineering department for 35 years. He has served as a member and president of the Copiague Library’s board of directors since 2008. Mr. O’Connell also serves his church as an ordained deacon and youth group leader. Dr. Royce attended the University of St. Joseph where she majored in chemistry. With career aspirations of becoming a pharmacist, she was accepted into an accelerated program in 2015 to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. In 2018, she passed her board and was offered a position as a pharmacist at Stop & Shop, where she was recently named pharmacy manager. In May 1998, Mr. Scully enlisted in the U.S. Navy and is still serving on active duty for more than 22 years. He advanced from airman to chief petty officer in 10 years, He currently holds the rank of lieutenant commander since 2021. He received his Bachelor of Science in human services in 2008 and a Master of Science in education in 2017, both from Old Dominion University. He is currently attached to the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22 where he is serving as assistant maintenance officer. Dr. Stelmach arrived in Copiague from Poland as a high school junior with only a rudimentary knowledge of the English language. After much encouragement from her teachers, she continued her education at Suffolk County Community College and then earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from SUNY Stony Brook.

She went on to earn her master’s degree in applied mathematics from Hofstra University and began teaching at Queensborough

Community College. She continues her work at QCC teaching mathematics and went back to school to earn her Master of Philosophy

and Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education from Columbia University in 2019.

A Thank You To Copiague’s BOE Copiague School District recognized the hard work and dedication of the members of its board of education during its Oct. 18 meeting. The New York State School Board Association designates the week of Oct. 18-22 as School Board Recognition Week. The recognitions kicked

off with a performance by eight select members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Madrigal Choir. The Copiague Teaching Aides and Assistants made a donation in the board’s name, while the Copiague clerical unit and the Copiague Association of Supervisors both made

donations to the Neil Schweitzer Scholarship Fund. The PTA Council and the Copiague Association of Principals donated funds to the Chris Madder Scholarship Fund, while Copiague Teachers Association donated to a three local food pantries.

Come October, it’s hard to miss the many indelible images associated with Halloween. Homeowners may decorate their home exteriors with scarecrows, inflatable ghouls and goblins, and jack-o’lanterns. Local businesses also may get in on the fun, offering “spooktacular” sales and decorating their storefronts with images of vampires, witches and other symbols of Halloween. Black cats have become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History. com, the notion of black

cats as bad omens can be traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection to sorcery could explain the link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today.

Despite the lengthy history suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. Obituary Mrs. Anne Booth, a resident of Amityville, LI., died September 27th at her home. She was 93 years old. Mrs. booth was born on November 15, 1927 in Copiague, LI to Luigi and Rose (Fucci) Forgione. She dedicated her life to the care of her husband and family. Mrs.

Booth was predeceased by her husband Howard in November 1989. Survivors include her children Douglas (Jean), Glenn (Linda), Mark (Laura) and Greg (Germaine); her grandchildren, Jessica Booth McKeon 9Mark), Joseph Booth (Ashley), and Olivia Booth; her great

granddaughter Sophia McKeon and many nieces and nephews. Deacon Par Labella conducted the service at the funeral home, followed by interment in Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include

former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.
