The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking breast cancer survivors to respond to a survey to determine the long and short-term value of support groups. The program, which has provided emotional support and education to New Yorkers concerned about breast cancer for 36 years, is in the second year of this research, asking survivors to share their feelings about support groups. The initial results of the research, conducted with 90 respondents, has produced some interesting data: • more than 75% of the respondents believe that being a member of a support group was valuable for their recovery; • 97% percent of respondents would

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and ﬂourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

“This is a powerful, educational program that will leave a lasting impression on how you treat each other,” said Copiague Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado. Starting with a slideshow of pictures to help students connect to a face, Mr. Halligan detailed the life of his son and the incessant bullying that occurred starting in fifth grade and the factors that led to his suicide. The program

allowed students to gain an inside perspective from the family of a student who was victimized by bullying. In the years since Ryan’s death, Mr. Halligan has been instrumental in passing anti-bullying laws including Vermont’s Bully Prevention Law and Vermont’s Suicide Prevention Law. Following the presentation, students had the opportunity for a question-and-answer session.

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. Pirates & Princesses The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final days of the 2016 season with its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Monday, October 10th. Hundreds of children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. “The Pirates and

Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect way to end our 2016 season,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner/Vice President, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “The weather was perfect, despite the rainy weekend, and all of the families seemed to have a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to hosting the event again next Fall, and we’re excited to reopen in the Spring with more fun events.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences,

where guests can get upclose and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff. In addition to camels, guests have always had the chance to hand-feed the LIGF’s resident giraffe, and bottle-feed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. As part of a fun, interactive assembly on October 18th, students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about the effects of bullying while also having fun. During the “Brain
