PSEG Long Island recently gave a grant of $8,000 to the Copiague Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses and local commerce. The Chamber used the money to purchase flags that are flying over Gateway Park (pictured) and holiday lights that will be displayed on Great Neck Road during the holiday season. “The Copiague Chamber of Commerce is thankful to PSEG Long Island for

its Outdoor Commerce and Beautification grant program,” said Donna Farina, Copiague Chamber of Commerce president. “They provided flags and holiday decorations for Copiague. It was a pleasure working with them in keeping our downtown beautiful. We look forward to working with them on future projects.” The PSEG Long Island Chamber Beautification grant program was created

All About Fall At Great Neck Road The kindergarten students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District are jumping into fall with lessons themed around pumpkins, apples and leaves. After reading “The Leaf Thief,” students created their own leaf-

shaped suncatchers in all the autumn colors. The suncatchers will hang on the classroom window and reflect the season’s colors into the room. Kindergartners also used apples to measure each other and counted how many apples they had to add or subtract to

cover the height of their classmates. The students also used paper plates to create and decorate their own pumpkins. The kindergarten students cut out the inner circle of the plate so they could become the pumpkin’s face.

Two brothers from Master Han’s Copiague Champions Taekwondo, Matthew Frejek and Anthony Frejek both went to the 2023 USAT National Championships in Jacksonville, Florida this year. Matthew Frejek placed 3rd (bronze medal) in Youth -30kg Fin Weight Black Belt Division Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 1st (gold medal) in -23kg Lightweight Division Intermediate Olympic Sparring. They also went to South Korea for the 2023 Korea Open International Taekwondo Championships. This is one of the biggest tournaments in the world. Matthew Frejek placed 3rd (bronze medal) in -27kg Fin Weight Black Belt Division Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 2nd (silver medal) in Color Belt Olympic Sparring -23kg Lightweight Division. Lastly, they attended one of the world’s major tournaments, the 2023 USAT Grand Prix Final Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Matthew Frejek placed 2nd (silver medal) in -30kg Fin Weight Division Black Belt Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 1st (gold medal) in -23kg Lightweight Division Intermediate Olympic Sparring. Matthew will try out for the 2024 U.S. National Taekwondo Team Trials in January in Charlotte, North Carolina. He’s been training and working hard everyday for this trial. Hope that he can be apart of the National Taekwondo Team next year!

As part of their day, many special-needs individuals perform a range of tasks for not-for-profits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of human kindness flowing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception. Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
