n an effort to foster the reading process in a fun environment, students in kindergarten through second-grade at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague Public School District participated in a Pajama Literacy Night inspired by author Eric Litwin’s Pete the Cat series. At the end of the evening, students received a book, headband, stickers and bookmark to take home. A great time was had by all.

This powerful morning of support for patients, survivors, loved ones, caregivers and the bereaved will support CancerCare’s Lung Cancer Support Program, the only ongoing lung cancer support program on Long Island. Seaford’s Kim Pellizzi and Bethpage resident Mat DeSanno both lost their mothers to lung cancer and have organized events in their memory and to support CancerCare. On Saturday evening, October 17th, Kim Pellizzi, will partner with East Meadow Lanes for her 9th annual fundraiser, “Strike Out Cancer.” Last year, more than 200 people took part and Kim and her family raised more than $20,000 for the Lung Cancer Walk for Hope. “CancerCare’s support has made every day a little easier,” said Kim. Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: JUSTIN MCGOWAN, AGE 16, MASSAPEQUA HIGH SCHOOL

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

Music with a Message Through the power of music, students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned an important message about anti-bullying during a special assembly by the “Hip Pickles” music group. Sponsored by the SEW PTA, the “Hip Pickles” performers used catchy

It was an evening to celebrate past accomplishments and to reminisce about high school sports team memories as former Amityville School District athletes and their families came together to attend the annual 2015 Sports Hall of Fame held in the high school gymnasium. After a welcome from Master of Ceremonies Bruce Pescitelli and an invocation and blessing by Reverend Dwayne Meadows, the Board of Directors and distinguished guests were introduced. Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Reynolds Hawkins then explained the purpose and importance of the Sports Hall of Fame as being an organization to inspire

present and future athletes. He also encouraged those in attendance to challenge current Amityville athletes to receive All-County, AllState, and All-American designations. “You have not only met the standards for the Sports Hall of Fame, but have exceeded them,” Reynolds said. “If it wasn’t for your play, there wouldn’t be a Sports Hall of Fame.” In addition, Catherine Taylor and Rosalie DeMarco Hauswirth from the 1946 and 1947 girls Hockey team and members of the 2001 and 2002 New York State boys track team were also honored. The following athletes were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame: • Jessica Thole Bernius – field hockey – Class
