Music lessons are taking place in unused bathrooms or on the stage during lunch periods. Science labs are overcrowded, and outdated equipment must be replaced to meet the needs of today’s more rigorous science, technology, engineering and math curriculum. Music rooms must be expanded and additional bathrooms must be ADAcompliant. Ceilings, flooring, lighting and windows that no longer allow light into the classrooms must be replaced as needed districtwide. Just like in a home, upgrades must be made to the electrical, plumbing and heating systems that are functioning ineffectively and in some cases have outlived their anticipated life expectancy and are no longer cost-efficient

The Copiague School District Board of Education adopted a capital project bond referendum, which, if approved by voters on November 23rd, 2015, will enable the district to make major repairs and renovations districtwide. It is important to note that of the 95 percent of the scope of work eligible for New York State Building Aid, the district will receive 75.2 percent in state aid. Essentially, community residents will be asked to pay for 24.8 percent of the cost, greatly reducing the cost to taxpayers. Only by proposing a bond referendum will the district be able to take advantage of the New York State Building Aid to fund the majority of the scope of work. For the past several months, the Board of Education listened to the opinions and concerns of community residents, carefully analyzed the spacing issues and infrastructure needs of each school with the district’s architect, and explored all financial options currently available to further reduce the cost to taxpayers. Student Spotlight THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp PaQua-Tuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. This year’s theme features pirates and a haunted mansion. The trails takes guests through four buildings around the campgrounds, and on a walk through the woods and along Kaler’s Pond, where the angry ghosts of double-crossed pirates are rumored to live. A bypass route is available for guests who wish to exit before the end. There will also be a variety of refreshments at the event, including hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, candy apples and hot pretzels. Admission to the event is $15 per person, with all of the proceeds benefitting the camp’s mission to provide a safe and funfilled environment for children and young adults with special needs during their summer and fall respite sessions. Thanks to thousands of participants, donors and guests, this event has raised $2.2 million for the camp since its first year in 1989. “Beware: the Spooky Walk is definitely not for the faint of heart,” says Marcella Weiss, member of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws and coordinator of the Spooky Walk. “You never know what is going to chase you, or will just stay in place. Voice Acting Class to Debut People from virtually all walks of life are entering voice acting for supplemental or retirement income, or even as a full time career. They’ve been told all their lives they have a pleasant voice, so why not make some money with it? The voice acting profession is experiencing tremendous growth while at the same time embracing a broadening range of voices. Advances in technology and changes in the way information is presented continue to open new doors for voice over artists. On Tuesday, October 27th, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, in conjunction with Voice Coaches, will present Getting Paid To Talk, a single-evening, realistic and entertaining introduction to the world of voice overs. Attendees will learn everything from the basics of getting started, working in the

studio, effective demo production methods, and industry pros and cons, to where to look for opportunities in and around their community and how to land the job. They will also have the opportunity to record a mock commercial under the direction of a Voice Coaches producer. Regardless of motivation, Getting Paid to Talk is a great first step for anyone curious about Voice Acting. Showcasing Character As part of its character education program, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognized students that displayed the character trait of kindness during the month of September. Each month, the school celebrates a different character trait that reinforces good behavior

such as responsibility, honesty, good judgment and respect. Teachers are provided with a monthly pledge to use in their classroom to help the students learn about that character trait. The winning students receive an award certificate, a prize and have their picture displayed on the bulletin board.

Walking for Alzheimer’s Following the success of its three previous events, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is holding its 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the

opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K walk kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. After the Walk, participants are invited to return to the Village Green for a fall-themed lunch buffet, entertainment and raffles at 11:45 a.m. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2015 Walk lunch tote and a 2015 Walk T-shirt. There is no registration fee

for teams or walkers who raise donations for the East End Walk, but a minimum donation of $25 is required. Online registration is now open at www.adrcinc.org. On-site registrations is available on the day of the event registration, with a general admission fee for non-sponsored walkers. All proceeds raised will support ADRC’s mission to care for local families.

The 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s commemorates the fouryear anniversary of the grand opening of ADRC’s office in Southampton. This satellite office was designed to allow care consultants to schedule caregiver support groups and family meetings, and to provide information for families and individuals on the east end of Long

Island who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixthleading cause of death.
