Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonproﬁts and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

This non-proﬁt is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most signiﬁcantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - Long Island will again unite in the fight against breast cancer with two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks this year, on Sunday, October 17 at Jones Beach and Saturday, October 20 on Main Street in Riverhead. HEALING A WRINKLED HEART - The kindergarten students in Ms. Nugget and Ms. Caputo’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about kindness by reading “Chrysanthemum,” by Kevin Henkes. In the book, the children make fun of Chrysanthemum’s name. The kindergarten students each were given a paper heart, and each time Chrysanthemum was teased, they crumbled up the heart. At the end of the story, the students were asked to fix the crumpled heart and make it smooth and straight again. The class discussed how unkind words can wrinkle someone’s heart, and it’s not always easy to fix words or actions. Students were encouraged to think before they speak and use kind words. Pink by the Bay Northwell Health campaign to bring breast cancer awareness into our Great South Bay communities.
