The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th - promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms. Homes with battery-disabled smoke alarms or alarms that have outlasted their full functionality put people at increased risk in the event of a home fire. Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smokedetecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extendedlife batteries and new tamper-resistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016. New York State law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke

The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to financial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often
do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times
before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole who have viewed the facts of this horrible event on television and through the newspapers have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push
themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholorships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. The family is asking businesses for their support in this fundraising endeavor. They hope you will be kind enough to make a donation to help make this evening a success. When making funeral arrangements, I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. They worry if they should have visiting one day or two days, or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes. Under most circumstances, there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral, he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes, they can delay the service for a day or two, but it should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. It is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worrying about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs, but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all, when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life, the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
