“There is no right way, only the right reason.” - Unknown For those who are familiar with my work interviewing public ﬁgures, I am often asked, “Don’t you get nervous to speak to these people?” Or, “Is it ever intimidating?” No, I don’t. And no, it’s not. People are shocked to hear that no matter who I sit down with, what awards they have won or how many people know their name, I do not experience the feeling of intimidation. It’s occurred to me over time that the reason my answer confuses people is because they don’t understand my perspective on the human experience. I think it’s about time I share my philosophy, because I want you to be empowered by it in your own life. Here is my secret... The reason I feel equal to any public ﬁgure I interview or meet is because we are all here in this earth school to learn. If you didn’t have a lot to learn, you likely wouldn’t be here. You’d be on some higher plain of existence somewhere, in some other dimension, and most

likely not on earth. Don’t take it personally. I’m here too! This goes for any of us. No matter our race or ethnicity, gender or sexuality, socio-economic status, education or level of notoriety, we are all here in this earth school because our soul still has much to learn. This knowing allows me to see everyone I meet as a fellow student on a collective journey. We’ve all signed up for different experiences based on what our soul came here to learn this go around. Since we have all learned different lessons based on our unique life experiences, every one of us has, both, things to learn and things to teach. As the late Maya Angelou said, “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” That is how I view my work as a journalist who interviews notable ﬁgures. I feel they have much to teach, as do I… as do you. But just like any of us, they also have much to learn, or they wouldn’t be here. I can’t tell you how many times I have been engaged in conversation with someone who

is seen by the world as extremely successful and accomplished, and I will share a thought or observation that stops them in their tracks. They will say to me, “Wow! I never thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing that.” Some of the world’s most successful people understand that listening and learning is every bit as important as sharing and teaching. They understand the exchange of energy that ﬂows between two human beings when both open up and allow it to happen. No matter how you see your station in life as this moment, be open to learning from those who are where you want to be, but do not ever think for a second that you do not have valuable insights to share, and something of great importance to teach. Be open. Be willing to learn as well as to teach. Be willing to receive as well as to give. And be selective with whom you share your gifts. Most importantly, be yourself, because what you bring to the table is truly unique and cannot be duplicated by another.

What Are You Going To Do With The Ashes

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes is some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date.

Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer, DuWayne Gregory, is seeking a local law to amend the County’s current land acquisition program to require sellers to disclose their campaign donations to County officials and candidates, and to clearly indicate any government employment they may hold. The property owner will still be responsible for filing a certified public disclosure statement with the Director of Real Property, but it will be the responsibility of Real Property to file that disclosure with the Clerk of the Legislature. Previously, the property owner was responsible for filing a certified statement with both offices. In addition, the certified public disclosure statement will now include information from the property owner as to whether the individual or individuals are officers or employees of Suffolk

Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. As Andie tells it, her “it girl” status throughout the late eighties and the whole of the nineties was a thrill ride, but left her feeling torn between an A-List career and being a hands-on mom to her three children. It was then that she resolved to stop making movies back-to-back, but to choose her projects more carefully, to be sure the role was worth time away from her family. Over the last eighteen years, MacDowell has continued to work steadily, choosing roles that move her, make her think, and those that allow her to unpack her more provocative side. In 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, MacDowell played Nancy, the flirtatious older woman who unapologetically has her way with Joe Manganiello’s character. It’s safe to say that at this stage in MacDowell’s career she is doing anything but playing it safe on screen. Allison Kugel: Do you feel a sense of relief that the kinds of roles you’re getting to play now are more character-driven, as opposed to the young female lead that you played in the nineties?

Andie MacDowell: I’m thankful for all the jobs I’ve had, and I’ve gotten to do some great parts. I don’t have any regrets, and I think those roles suited me at that age and time. I think as you get older, you are a character (laughs). You have a lot more depth by the time you’re my age, because you’ve had to struggle. My life has not been a piece of cake. I understand what it is to have a complex life. Allison Kugel: Your latest movie, Love After Love, is about grieving and finding your way back after the loss of a loved one. What are the things that you turn to when the ground starts to shake beneath your feet? Andie MacDowell: Oh, I’m always looking for my center. I hike a lot, and I like to be in nature around trees. I love to ride horses… Allison Kugel: Me too! Andie MacDowell: Do you? They say that it has a physical effect on you. Allison Kugel: I believe that. I always say that riding horses is my yoga. People are always bugging me to do yoga and it’s not really my thing. Riding gives me that meditative feeling. Andie MacDowell: I should be riding right now. It’s soothing and calming, it lowers your cortisol levels. Being around animals, in general, is really comforting. Allison Kugel: What do you teach your kids about emotional and spiritual resiliency? Andie MacDowell: They are spiritual,

which I am thankful for. I put no pressure on them to believe anything that I believe, but I think it’s healthy to have spirituality in your life. My children are very peace-seeking people, and love-seeking people. To me, God is love, so they are headed in the right direction. Allison Kugel: In your earlier career, you were doing movie after movie – Sex, Lies, and Videotape; Green Card; Groundhog’s Day; Four Weddings and a Funeral – and all eyes were on you. What did that moment in time feel like for you? Andie MacDowell: I could have done a lot more, but one year I did three movies in a year and I realized that I could not be a good mother and do that many movies. I was so popular, and I was so young. I could usually decide when I wanted to work and go find a job; it was that easy. And I would always try to do one independent [film] and one studio film. That would be my goal each year. Life was great. I have to say it was wonderful to be in that position. Allison Kugel: And then you entered your forties. Andie MacDowell: Yes, it’s true. People would keep saying to me when I would get interviewed, “How does it feel to turn forty and know that you’re not going to work anymore?” And it really was… kind of like a light switch. Allison Kugel: In the early years of your career, did you ever have a #MeToo moment? Andie MacDowell: I didn’t ever have sexual problems in the context of my career. I had #MeToo issues, but not in the business. What I find equally as important as the #MeToo movement, is that I strongly believe this is the first time we have had any voice. Women have always been accused of being too emotional. If you’ve studied therapy, early on according to Carl Jung, a woman who wanted to be independent was crazy. That’s how far we have had to come. Just to be independent, not too long ago, we were called insane. There are so many social issues right now that are really important. My hope is that every aspect of how we have been diminished is going to be opened up. People will see and question why they would have to ask a woman the question that they asked me when I turned forty, and yet not ask it of a man. It’s important that we take a hard look at that.

Allison Kugel: How do you define “happy?” Andie MacDowell: I think happiness is peace of mind. It’s definitely not superficial. Happiness is not a big house. I’ve had a big house and I’ve had a small house, and I think I was happier in the smaller house. Happiness is never going to be things. Allison Kugel: What do you believe in, and who or what do you pray to? Andie MacDowell: Ha! I pray to a very liberal Jesus. I grew up going to church and it was a warm environment where my mother played the organ and my favorite song was Jesus Loves the Little Children. It’s such a corny little song, but I love it. “All the children of the world; black and yellow, red and white; they’re all precious in His sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.” I grew up going to Sunday school and sang that song, and it was sweet. It’s nothing to do with politics or any concept that everybody has unfortunately thrown onto my concept of who He is. Allison Kugel: How are you going to ring in your sixtieth birthday? Andie MacDowell: I’m going to be working, which is what I like to do! That’s a good thing. I want to do something special. Maybe I’ll go to India. I’ve been wanting to go to India for a long time. Allison Kugel: What do you think this new decade will bring into your life? Andie MacDowell: I know what I hope it brings. I would like to do more spiritual work. Go listen to Ram Dass talk, and Marianne Williamson; go to a yoga retreat and cultivate

every aspect of myself so that I can continue to work on peace of mind. As you get older, I feel like if you’re going down the right road there is this clarity that you can see in your eyes. It’s a gentleness that is the most beautiful aspect a human can have. That is my goal, to continue to work on that gentle side of myself.

The school hosted Grandparents Day, an annual event which celebrates and honors important family members in the lives of children. Many of the children’s special guests came and

Here are a few tips for getting your home ready to show itself off to your pocketbook’s best advantage:

Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. Repair broken windows and shutters.

Clean everything in and out of sight. Shampoo rugs and wax floors. Wash or brush walls. Wash windows and clean blinds and draperies. 10. Weed clutter out of closets and cupboards. 11. Create space by storing some of the extra furniture you’ve found useful (bureaus, bookcases, storage chests, oversized chairs) but which makes a crowded impression. 12. Place the remaining furniture so that traffic can flow easily from room to room.

13. Unless you’re a skilled artist, scale down your personal art work (portraits, landscapes), posters, signs, and family photos, especially in teenagers’ rooms. Create a feeling of spaciousness. 14. Keep shades and draperies open, to admit as much light as possible, but screen out unappealing views. 15. Let your kitchen look warm and welcoming, not a hectic workplace. Keep your sink shining and free of dirty dishes at all times. 16. Organize cupboards. 17. Clean the refrigerator. 18. Keep counter tops clear, but not empty (as if unused); adorn them with your most attractive canisters. 19. Completely degrease your oven. Let the kitchen smell fresh and fragrant (with cinnamon warming in the clean oven, if you have time). 20. Remove debris (dust, flies, moths, etc.) from all light fixtures. 21. Keep bathrooms scrubbed, tidy and equipped with fresh soap and neatlyhung towels (matching, if possible). 22. Get rid of all stains and install new washers and dripping faucets. 23. Feature (with lighting or furniture arrangement) your home’s best characteristics (a fireplace, a picture window, a balcony, ceiling beams, a kitchen eating area, etc.). 24. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
