The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

Eagle Pride Soars School pride was in the air on September 24th as Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated homecoming with festivities, including a parade, fair, football game and Hall of Achievement induction ceremony. The day’s events kicked off with a spirited parade that started at Great Neck Elementary School and ended at the high school. The freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes marched along the route with their “Around the World”-themed floats, while the marching band provided the soundtrack. Also taking part in the

parade were numerous groups and organizations from the high school, middle school and elementary schools. Following the parade, a ceremony was held on the football field where cheerleaders and the step team performed after the homecoming queen and king, Diana Lopez and Rigaud Destime were introduced. Speaking during the ceremony were school administrators and local government officials. The afternoon continued as the varsity football team took on Centereach High School. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles

were unable to defeat the Cougars. During the halftime show, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School marching band, cheerleaders and step team treated the crowd to rousing performances. The festivities concluded with the district’s annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony at the high school. This year’s inductees included Class of 1984 alumnus Jim Konen, Class of 1998 alumna Dr. Leslie Marino and Class of 1977 alumnus Craig Stadelman. This effort also brings awareness to the importance of keeping our waterways clean and protecting our precious wildlife. Hundreds of cigarette butts, bottle caps, straws and plastic items were removed from Gilgo Beach, totaling 182 lbs. Many local school districts, students,

scouts, athletic teams and residents participated in the initiative. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly joined the volunteers at Gilgo and commended them for their time and efforts to help keep the Town of Babylon beaches clean and beautiful. The volunteers will each received Certificates of Appreciation for their community service.

While working toward her degrees, she took time to participate in a HIV/AIDS awareness program in Tanzania; spent a year working for Dr. Mehmet Oz running a pilot program to bring health education into city schools and studied epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. During her residency, she received numerous awards, including the Perry Research Award, the Barbara Liskin Award and was selected by her peers as a chief resident. She is currently a research fellow in the Division on

Substance Abuse and works on initiatives with the state and city Department of Health to increase access to treatment for addition. Stadelman works at the New York Blood Center as a donor specialist and was previously employed as a phlebotomist at Brunswick Hospital Center. When not at work, he is serving as the fire coordinator for the Town of Babylon and assists fire chiefs at the scenes of major structural fires. He is also a detective with the Suffolk County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a member of the Copiague Fire Department, where he served as chief and is an EMS instructor and a first aid teacher. He has been honored with the EMS Educator of the Year for Suffolk County and New York State and is a member of the Suffolk County REMAC committee. On 9/11, he served as a triage officer for the FDNY-EMS service.

Cremation is permitted by the Catholic Church. Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. However, although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a bodysoul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physcial signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we sue this term instead of the term “cremains,” as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it. ~ November 4, 2012

Wednesday, September 21st was no exception. “Our Long Island Board installation dinner features the induction of new Long Island Board members which this year include: Dr. Benjamin R. Cohen, Neurosurgeon, Dr. Rajiv Jauhar, Cardiologist at Northwell Health, On Friday, September 23rd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, in partnership with the Stony Brook Trauma Center, hosted the first Suffolk County Senior Health and Wellness Expo. The event was a part of Senior Center Month and National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. It took place at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai and attracted over 150 residents. “I am proud to partner with the Stony Brook Trauma Center on this great event to help raise awareness about the importance of falls

prevention and the many senior programs available throughout Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker. At the event, Stony Brook nurses and physical therapy students conducted fall risk assessments. Then, attendees were given information about different balance programs and measures to take to prevent homes falls. The event also included representatives from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and

Emergency Services, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), AARP, Rite Aid, and U Fitness. The Suffolk County Police were also present for Operation Medicine Cabinet, a drug take-back program that allows resident to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications, and the Suffolk County Sheriffs were available to create emergency identification cards for attendees. Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) I FISH NY Program’s annual Fall Family Fishing Festival will be held on Saturday, October 15th, at Hempstead Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit is sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks,

Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). “The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great fun of freshwater fishing,” Regional Director Gallagher said. “The festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of activities for children to guarantee a fun outdoor experience for families.” A fishing license is not required to fish at this event and admissions

and parking are free. The festival begins at 10 a.m. with casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish-cleaning services. The festival will also feature displays by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, OPRHP, as well as other fishing and environmental organizations. Children’s activities will begin at 10 a.m. and include pumpkin decorating, the Raptor Project Show, a bounce slide, and face painting.

Participants can catch a pumpkin or “hook” a prize in a casting contest held by the Knights of Columbus of Seaford.
