East Hampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s substance abuse and addiction programs for teens. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Beach

Club for a delicious dinner. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused intervention, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicting in the first place. Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand

each GNR student to discuss a personal goal he or she would like to achieve by the end of the school year. A school wide teambuilding activity allowed faculty and students to practice teamwork, trust and cooperation. As a class, students worked together to pass a hula-hoop around in a circle while keeping their hands interlocked. Students and staff in the entire school were then instructed to join hands while more than 70 hula-

hoops were passed around the circle. Other highlights from the week included a PTAsponsored motivational media pep rally assembly, blue and white day, reada-shirt day, and special a performance by members of the GNR faculty. “We host educational pep rally week to promote teamwork, positive education, good behavior and to build a sense of community in our school,” said Mrs. Cangelosi.

New York Jets legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath hosted his 11th March of Dimes Celebrity Golf Classic on Thursday, September 17th, on Long Island. This year’s event attracted nearly 100 entertainment and sports celebrities, including 30 Hall of Famers from football, baseball, hockey and basketball. Held on four golf courses at Bethpage State Park (Home of past U.S. Opens, as well as future host to the Ryder Cup and Barclays), the March of Dimes welcomed nearly 500 attendees to the tournament. The evening program was emceed by ESPN Sports Anchor Chris Berman and also featured entertaining stand-up comedy from George Lopez. The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

Colonel of the United States Army Reserves, detailed the hardships that the Hunter Squires Jackson post has faced since their facility was damaged. A check was presented to Post Commander Charlie Martin. Those participating in the event launched their kayaks at 9:00 a.m. and embarked on one of three trails, depending on skill level: 2.5 miles for beginners, 3.5 for intermediate and 5.5 for advanced. Kayakers had the opportunity to explore little seen areas of the Great South Bay including views of Cedar Island and sights of marine wildlife, such as snowy egrets and blue herons. Following the tour, kayakers were invited to the Cedar Beach Hut to celebrate the day’s festivities with a free lunch.

On Saturday, September 19th, the Town of Babylon hosted the first annual “Kayaking for a Cause” event at Cedar Beach Marina, bringing over 50 kayakers out to paddle in support of Amityville’s Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218, which was recently damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy and vandalism. The total amount raised for the local veterans topped $15,000, made up of registration fees from the event, contributions collected from local businesses and a large donation from Island Park based American Legion Post 1029. “This event not only provided a great opportunity for a funfilled day on the water but also for us to give back to individuals who already gave so much for this country,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who organized the event. “I am proud that we were able to help the veterans of Hunter Squires Jackson Post 1218, as they work to get their building back to working condition.” A ceremony was held to launch the kayakers at Cedar Beach Marina, where Deputy Supervisor Martinez welcomed visitors and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lt.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries is equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and the name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes, providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The realty is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After this time, and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Pinwheels for Peace As a sign of unity and solidarity, Amityville Memorial High School students, teachers and administrators took part in a “Pinwheels for Peace” ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Peace and promote their commitment to world peace initiatives on

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre announced that the Copiague School District will receive over $800,000 in additional funding from the state for a Universal Pre-K program, after having fought to ensure this funding would be part of this year’s state budget. This new funding is in addition to $516,000 Assemblywoman JeanPierre secured in the budget earlier this year. “Early childhood education helps give every student a fair chance to succeed,” said Assemblywoman Jean-

Pierre. “This funding will help put kids right here on Long Island on the path to a brighter future.” Research shows that early childhood education can improve a child’s academic performance throughout their life. This program will help to level the playing field by ensuring that all kids have equal access to early education. “We are grateful for Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s efforts in securing additional aid for the Copiague School District, which will be used to expand our 1:1
