Hispanic Heritage Month got off to an energetic start at Amityville Memorial High School as the school hosted a performance by the Sol Y Sombra Spanish Dance Company on September 15th. Experienced dancers donned colorful garb and entertained students and teachers, who gathered
in the auditorium for the afternoon show. The program included a folk dance from Spain, the flamenco and the tango. Several students were then invited up on stage to learn and perform traditional Latin dances like the merengue slide. The performance was hosted by the Hispanic

Culture Through Dance Heritage Club, under the direction of advisers Elisa Castro and Maria LeonPineros. Throughout the month, there will be daily announcements with facts about Latin culture and Hispanic-Americans who have made significant contributions to society.

Initially, the second phase was scheduled for completion next summer. “We are very pleased with the work and the speed of which it is being completed,” Dr. Kelly said. She provided highlights from the summer, including the extended school year and summer feeding programs, curriculum writing, professional development and preparation of the buildings. Board of Education members in the Amityville Union Free School District learned about the progress that has been made during the first year of the fiveyear Strategic Plan. They heard from each building principal during the September 13th board meeting. High School Principal Maria Andreotti reported that participation in Advanced Placement courses nearly doubled in the 2016-2017 school year from the year before. She also said that of the students who took the new AP Seminar course last year, nearly two-thirds scored a 3 or higher. Edward Plaia, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, said that last year was the first time all eighth-graders were accelerated in math and science, and those who passed those Regents exams earned high school
