FEMA Extends Deadline The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through non-

A Summer Send-Off On September 2nd, music instructor Jack Licitra and assistant teacher Anne Crean brought their music enrichment program to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck for one final round of singing and dancing. Supported by funds raised during off-season events, such as Bradstock, the duo was initially invited to the camp by Camp Director Bridget Costello, who had seen Mr. Licitra perform at other events. The program focused not only on the music, but on the means by which the campers could perform. Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials, such as art dowels and five-gallon paint buckets for drumming and plastic bottles filled with rice that

He feels this is especially true of disabled children and young adults, like those at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, who might not otherwise be able to communicate their joy and enthusiasm. He encouraged campers to let their “inside voice out” and said that “every person is born with a song” as he invited campers and counselors to sing karaoke-style in front of their peers, who cheered encouragement. Throughout the farewell concert, campers clapped along and played tambourines, maracas and drums. Mr. Licitra is the singer and keyboardist for Jack’s Waterfall and currently teaches a Musical Explorers class for young children at his studio, Arts Pharmacy in Sayville. In Remembrance In honor of the 14th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, students, faculty and administrators at Copiague Middle School in the Copiague School District paid tribute to the lives lost, the heroic first responders and the families left behind on this momentous day in history. silent reflection, Principal Andrew Lagnado read “One,” a poem written by University of Houston professor Cheryl Sawyer in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, and members of the band, under the direction of Tim Gavin, played “Taps.” “We must never forget those who perished, those

who were first responders, those who assisted in the healing process and those who continue to defend our freedom today,” said Mr. Lagnado in his address to the student body. “It is especially important that we never forget so that history never repeats itself.”

O’Connell Copiague High School, was selected by Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare to participate in the 29th annual Youth Academy “Counseling & Treating People of Colour: An International Perspective” National Leadership Conference. Nominated by her uncle, Guelee, along with other students ages 10 to 17, will travel to Mesa, Arizona to attend the peer leadership conference from November 8th-11th. According to

conference program director Dr. Frances L. Brisbane, the program aims to expose youth to professionals who mentor them in the areas of career choices, goal setting, pursing paths most likely to lead to successful lives and the ability to become leader-role models as youth and as adults. For the fifth consecutive year, the Copiague School District was the recipient of a back to school supply drive coordinated by the United Way and Make It Count foundations and subsequently facilitated locally by the Copiague Middle School Builders Club. The supplies arrived in the district just in time for the start of the new school year and were unloaded,

sorted and repackaged with the help of members of Builders Club, which is the junior version of the Key Club. This year’s supply boxes were once again filled with such items as crayons, notebooks, pens and pencils and backpacks. “We are pleased to be able to participate in the United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus event each year,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. “It

provides the members of Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club with an opportunity to take part in a service learning project, and at the same time provides school supplies for children who need them.” Representatives from the United Way and Make It Count foundations were also on hand to help volunteers unload the helpful donations.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal

is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter. Honoring Heroes Marking the 14th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, students in Joanna Conboy’s fifthgrade class at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District honored the day by celebrating heroes in their own lives. Following a Power Point lesson about heroes of 9/11 and in the community, fifth-graders listened as Mrs. Conboy read “Nubs:

The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle” written by Brain Dennis, Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery. During the story, students learned that while Marine Major Brain Dennis was overseas on duty he found a hero in Nubs, an Iraqi dog of war. As a class, students discussed the companionship Major Dennis and Nubs found in each other during their journey and characteristics

that represent a hero. To conclude the lesson, fifthgraders were instructed to write about a hero in their life and describe qualities that make the person or animal a hero. “I like to teach a heroic outlook on September 11th,” said Mrs. Conboy. “Instead of focusing my attention on the Twin Towers and the devastation we faced 14 years ago, we focus more on who our heroes were.”

Athlete Qualifies Tysheem Griffin, a senior at Amityville Memorial High School, has qualified to compete in the 2015 International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS) Global Games held in Quito, Ecuador in late September. The INAS Global Games occur every four years and is a celebration of

international competition and sportsmanship for nearly 1,000 elite athletes with intellectual disabilities from more than 35 countries. To qualify for the competition, athletes must meet the eligibility criteria and performance times, competing at a high level in their sport. For the fourth INAS Global Games, para-

athletes have the opportunity to compete for the world championship in nine sports – athletics, basketball, cycling, futsal, rowing, swimming, tennis, taekwondo and table tennis.
