Service Award Honorees During Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept. 1, the Copiague School District recognized 27 staff members for their dedicated years of service to the district. A s s i s t a n t Superintendent for Human Resources Todd Andrews announced each staff
member and called them up to the podium one by one to receive their service award. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon presented a token of appreciation for their service to the students of Copiague. “Thank you for all you have done and all that you will continue
to do for the students of the district: Copiague,” Dr. Bannon 30-year Service Award said. Leading Off the Year backpacks stuffed with new school supplies. Principals and teachers stood outside and helped guide students into one of the district’s four elementary schools, Copiague Middle School or Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Student orientations during the summer
months eased the transition for many new to the building, and at the upper level grades, teachers helped students navigate the hallways and lockers. Throughout the week, students settled into their new routines and looked forward to an exciting school year.

Supplied and Ready Eighty-five boxes filled with every supply a student could need – backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, washable markers, pencil cases, crayons, glue/glue sticks, scissors, rulers and hand wipes – were dropped off at the Copiague School District on September 7th thanks to the generosity of United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus
campaign. Educational Bus Transportation, which services the Copiague School District, pulled into the administrative building with the packed boxes and members of Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club, the junior version of the Key Club, were on hand ready to help unload the packages. Representatives from
United Way said they received more donations than ever and the need keeps growing. The program, now in its eighth year, also has the support of many corporate partners. The Builders Club, along with adviser Maria Ostrofsky, will sort through the supplies and package them for distribution throughout the buildings.

The security resource, A Secure Life, points out that more than 18,000 Americans die every year from injuries that take place in the home. Unintentional injuries account for millions of medical visits each year. Home injuries also are prevalent elsewhere in the world. In the United Kingdom, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reports that there are

Many carbon monoxide detectors work for five to seven years. Check the back of alarms for a date stamp that indicates how old the product is and when it expires. Safety checklists are an important part of home maintenance. A proactive approach can prevent both injuries and damage to the home.
How to Recognize Water Damage in a Home
Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible: Stains Many prospective home buyers
Deteriorating Wood Wood around windows or doors that is deteriorating may indicate water problems. The wood might be deteriorating because water is infiltrating the wood during
storms. Baseboards and molding that is dilapidated or beginning to deteriorate may also indicate water damage. Buckled Drywall or Wood Drywall or wood that is buckled or beginning to buckle is another potential indicator of water damage. Drywall buckles when it gets wet, and that is often a sign that there is a leak behind the drywall. Severely buckled drywall will feel as if it has ridges. Wood also buckles when it is exposed to excess moisture, and this can usually be felt when walking on the wood barefoot or in socks. Odor Sometimes water damage is best detected by the smell test. Homeowners who notice
the smell of mold or mildew in rooms that previously never emanated such odors might have homes that are in the early stages of water problems. The water damage might be behind the walls, where mold is beginning to form thanks to water damage. Older homes tend to be musty, but call in a professional if you notice that mustiness if more pungent than usual. Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping
choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Happy pumpkin picking to all!

to new heights in their own individual way before the torch was passed to the current LIJSL President, Anthony Maresco, in January 2015. The LIJSL has been in the forefront of youth soccer for the past half-century. Children With Special Needs playing soccer in an organized league actually started in the LIJSL back in 1978 when the Huntington Boys Club (HBC) and Massapequa Soccer Club separately started programs. Craig Ludin, who has Down’s Syndrome and has been playing for HBC since he was a young boy in what is now known as our TOPSoccer Program, has received so many medals from the Special Olympics that he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1980, Rocco Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program to improve discipline on soccer fields. To this day, after every LIJSL regular season game, the match referee grades teams based on cooperation of players, coaches and fans, overall game conduct and player appearance. The team in each division with the most points at the end of the Spring and Fall Seasons receives the highly-regarded LIJSL Sportsmanship Award and their players proudly wear a LIJSL Sportsmanship patch on their shirt as a symbol of this achievement. The first high school all-star competition, the Exceptional Senior Games, was started by the LIJSL in 1981. The games continue every November on Long Island although the LIJSL has passed the torch to organizing the competition to the high school associations in Suffolk and Nassau counties. In 1983, the LIJSL Convention started and it attracts 10,000 soccer fans every March to the Huntington Hilton. The convention, high school all-star competition, sportsmanship program and TOPSoccer Program have since been copied by other leagues across the country and even outside the United States. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery! For his 27 years volunteering as LIJSL President, Peter Collins was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 1998. Collins and Amoroso, who died this past May, also received the
