museum. Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call. On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57). The Vanderbilt family had served in every

William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva. The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany. On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943. Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York. The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. New Look for Copiague Schools After almost two years of construction and renovations throughout many of its schools, Copiague School District opened its doors for the start of the 2018-2019 school year on September 5th. For the first time, students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School walked into their new entrance on the first day of school, as the schools were divided into two separate buildings during construction.

At Deauville Gardens West Elementary School, the students were greeted by their new principal, Kristina Biamonte, as they explored their new classrooms and connected with friends. Incoming sixth-graders and freshmen explored their new buildings prior to the start of the school during their respective orientations. Students received their schedules and tried out their lockers to help ease the transition to a new

school. At Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, which also received an updated exterior look, students spent the day exploring some of the new amenities at the school, such as a new electronic music laboratory, ceramics room, science lab and auditorium renovation. As the first week of school ended, the students eased into their new schedules and routines in preparation for a productive school year.

The district is entering the third year of the five-year strategic plan, “Putting Amityville on the Map.” Dr. Kelly said that there are measured successes in the plan’s three areas: student achievement, school culture and climate, and parent and community partnerships. Principals and directors will discuss progress and present data at an upcoming board of education meeting. “Our district has made tremendous strides in all areas,” Dr. Kelly said. “We have much to be proud of and we have much to be optimistic about. We are well on our way to putting Amityville on the map and achieving our vision of becoming a high-performing school district.” Dr. Kelly cited the district’s inclusion on the College Board’s AP District Honor Roll for its student participation and achievement in Advanced

Placement courses. She noted the award-winning art and music programs, partnerships with area colleges, and athletes who are recognized equally for sportsmanship and scholarship as they are for their athletic accomplishments. She spoke about the importance of building positive relationships and called on every staff member to “be that one person who makes a difference” in the life of a child. Keynote speaker Dr. Ruby Payne, an author and educator, provided staff with tools and strategies to deal with the emotional realities of students. She taught them several calming techniques and provided copies of one of her books. Staff members participated in professional development workshops throughout the day and teachers also had time to set up their classrooms for the start of the new school year.

Amityville Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly wished the staff a “happy new year” as they returned for the start of the 2018-2019 school year on August 30th, five days ahead of students. At the annual convocation in the high school auditorium, the district’s approximately 700 staff members gathered to hear about the accomplishments of the past year and what’s ahead for the coming year. Dr. Kelly spoke about the construction work that will soon be starting at the high school to add a new gymnasium, science labs and classrooms, as well as renovations to the existing building; all part of a $69.9 million bond passed by voters in March 2016. “The end result is going to be so fabulous for our students and for our community,” she said of the work which also includes upgrades to the middle school and three

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 20th for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice creameating contest.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a latesummer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest

Babylon Beach Blast as they were cheered on by friends, family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2018 summer season.

At the Copiague School District’s August 14th Board of Education meeting, the board appointed two new elementary school assistant principals, effective Auguse 20th. Jean Ann Crespo will split her time as assistant principal of Great Neck Road and Deauville Gardens East elementary schools. She is replacing Janine Proulx who will serve as assistant principal of Susan E. Wiley Elementary School. Nicole Waring will serve the dual role of FRESHMAN PREPARATION- Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s assistant principal at incoming freshmen received their schedules and lockers, and toured the building on Deauville Gardens West August 30th. Elementary and district-

wide elementary math staff developer. Crespo has been with the Copiague School District since 2008. She worked as a special education science teacher at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and also served as an assistant principal in the district’s elementary and secondary summer school programs. Crespo holds a bachelor’s degree in child study from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s of science in adolescent education from Dowling College and an educational leadership advanced certificate from Stony Brook University. Waring comes to the district with 11 years of teaching experience, most recently as a third-grade teacher in Ridgewood. She also served as a testing coordinator and professional development facilitator. Waring holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in childhood education, and a school building/district leadership certification from Stony

Brook University. A member of the Copiague School District since 2003, Proulx most recently worked as the assistant principal of Deauville Gardens East and Great Neck Road elementary schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education

from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in technological systems management from Stony Brook University, and a school building and school district leadership certification from Stony Brook University.
