A SALUTE TO OUR SENIORS - Dominican Village saluted their senior residents on Friday, August 21st for National Senior Citizens Day! Refreshments were hand delivered to over one hundred residents. The staff celebrated each resident personally by “poppin - in” with a fresh bag of popcorn, a watermelon fruit cup and to thank them for their contributions to their communities. “No one is Butter than our seniors!!!!.”

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.

Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20.
