By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder
why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

Following this year’s Superintendent’s Conference Day theme of Celebration, 30 staff members of the Copiague School District were recognized for reaching a milestone of 20, 25 and 30 years of dedicated service to the Copiague School District. As Superintendent for Human Resources Todd J. Andrews recited each award recipient’s name, the audience was treated to a throwback photo of the staff member as it appeared on the projector screen. SCIENCE FICTION IN THE SPOTLIGHT SUBMITTED BY: JENNIFER FURST, AGE 15, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL Scientists still don’t know how it happened, if it was a disease or genetic mutation... In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing
a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

During the Babylon Citizens Council of the Arts Teen Theatre Awards on June 12th, the district’s production of The Wizard of Oz won the best musical award. Each year, B.A.C.C.A. awards students in The Town of Babylon for outstanding performances in their high school theatre productions. West Babylon students were judged among nine other school districts. In
addition to Best Musical, Alexa Lucchesse (Dorothy) received the award for Outstanding Female Vocal performance by an Actress in a leading role; Angeline Miller (Wicked Witch) was awarded outstanding performance by an actress in a featured role. In addition the production also won Best stage Crew- Kyle Garcia, Kyle Henshaw, Joey Partain, and Joey Valenti.

Preparing for the Move In an effort to ease the transition for incoming sixth- and ninth-graders in the Copiague School District, Copiague Middle School and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted individual student orientations and barbecues. During each orientation program, the students and their parents received
warm greetings from building administrators and faculty members, picked up their schedules and took tours of the school buildings. At the middle school, students toured the building with their homeroom teacher, while high school students navigated through the halls following their first day of school class
schedule. In addition, sixth- and ninth-graders had the opportunity test out their new lockers and combinations. Sponsored by the Copiague Youth League for the middle school and the PTSA for the high school, students and their parents enjoyed hot dogs, soda and chips at the barbecues.

To commence the 20152016 school year, the Copiague School District hosted 22 of its newest faculty members during its annual two-day New Teacher Orientation on August 25th and 26th. To kick off the orientation, Dr. Kathleen Bannon, future Superintendent of Schools, Brian J. Sales, Board of Education President, and Todd J. Andrews, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided words of welcome and insight to the culture of the Copiague School District. “One phrase that I am sure you will hear and see many times is ‘Copiague is a great place to live and learn,’ said Mr. Sales. “We stand behind that phrase and believe that all children can learn. The future is dependent on our ability to properly educate our students and we want you to be part of that team that is making great things happen in Copiague every day.” Following the initial introductions, teachers embarked on a short bus tour of the community and were given the opportunity to ask questions about the school district. The orientation continued with presentations by district administrators on topics including instructional technology, personnel and policy information and how to ensure a successful start to the school year. To conclude the event, new employees met with seasoned teachers in their respective school buildings to discuss best practices and building procedures. “We have every belief that you are going to be highly successful in the job that you are embarking upon,” said Dr. Bannon.
