Labor Day is a celebration of workers and the labor movements in the United States and Canada. Often considered the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day prompts many people to travel for one last getaway prior to the arrival of fall. Labor Day get-togethers with family and friends typically include barbecues and other outdoor activities, and these gatherings may attract loved ones from various areas of the country. The National Safety Council warns that thousands of people will be injured in traffic accidents during the upcoming Labor Day weekend. In recent years, traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend have averaged around 15 percent higher than in similar, nonholiday periods, says the NSC. In addition, the COVID-19 virus, although diminished, is still at large. Travelers are urged to

remain diligent in regard to hygiene and other safety practices. The following tips can help Labor Day travelers stay as safe as possible. • Call ahead and inquire about any travel restrictions. Many areas of the country have reopened, but it is important to find out if there are restrictions on crowd limits or if certain facilities are closed. • Book early and leave time for travel. They met the summer of 1983 at the East Meadow Jewish Center bingo when Lynda came to the weekly bingo with her Mom (Lenora) and Howard was the bingo caller. 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to ﬁve amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and

School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Awards 10 Scholarships Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - recently awarded ten new scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded

to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain

damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s

WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.
