I thought it might be helpful to remind you of some information concerning the Catholic Church’s teaching and viewpoint on the practice of cremation. As you know, the Church does permit the practice of cremation as long as it is not being done as a direct contradiction to Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body on the last day. “Cremated remains” is the preferred term which gives more dignity to the mortal remains of the Christian, rather than the slang term “cremains.” The cremated remains may even be brought into church and the Funeral Mass may take place in the presence of the cremated remains if for some reason cremation takes place before the Mass is celebrated. However, the Church has some very specific rules concerning the respect and dignity to be accorded to the cremated remains. Article 417 in the Order of Christian Funerals tells us this - please take note of this very carefully: “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.” So, to put it bluntly, one must do with the cremated remains what one would do with the body of the deceased: they must be buried or entombed. It is not appropriate to scatter the ashes or to keep them at home, nor is it acceptable to divide up the cremated remains into different pieces of jewelry for the family. I’m not kidding about that last one - the funeral industry will actually offer this as an option, but that is completely against Catholic teaching, and we should not participate in such a practice. Should you be thinking about cremation for yourself or for a family member, please be sure to follow the Catholic Church’s teaching about this practice, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

A new electric bus offering zero emissions is coming to the Copiague Public School District thanks to Educational Bus Transportation, which provides transportation services to the district. The first of its kind on Long Island, the bus offers seating capacity for 25 students and will be in service to begin the school year. “We are proud to be the first district on Long Island to make such a major commitment to the environment and to cleaner air for our students,” announced Copiague Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon. “Thanks to Educational Bus Transportation, our district will benefit from an all-electric vehicle that is sustainable, safe, and efficient. We look forward to making the environment a better place now and for our next generation of students.”

According to Educational Bus Transportation President Sean Corr, the new bus has a range of up to 120 miles before requiring charging and is the first Department of Transportation-approved electric school bus put in service in New York State. “The new bus appealed to us because it is built right here in New York State and performs all the same functions as a traditional bus without generating emissions,” Corr explained. “In addition, it provides a quieter ride for passengers, reduces fuel expenses by using low-cost electricity, and offers significantly reduced service and maintenance costs. Superintendent Bannon and Assistant Superintendent Peter Michaelson should be commended for being so open and receptive to our proposal for including this innovative vehicle in our fleet of buses serving the district. It’s a significant

first step towards alternative transportation that embraces today’s clean technology.” In addition to Copiague, Educational Bus Transportation provides school bus transportation to a number of districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
