An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,

eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

Memorial Elementary School. Pieces of cast stone on the front of the building that were chipped and cracked will be replaced. The stone dates back to the original construction of the south wing in 1923 and north wing in 1932. Scaffolding has been erected around the facade and work will continue during the evening once the school year begins. Duct work has been replaced on the roof of Park Avenue. Replacement of interior doors and hardware at all schools will take place during the first few months of the school year. Construction on the addition to Amityville Memorial High School, which includes a new gymnasium, classrooms and science labs, is set to begin in June 2018. Plans have already been submitted to the State Education Department,

Window panes have been replaced at Northwest and Northeast elementary schools. The window frames remained but all of the old Lexan glass was removed, which became cloudy over the years. It was replaced with new glass that will allow more natural light into classrooms. Approximately 280 window panes were replaced at Northeast, the district’s pre-K and kindergarten center, and about 320 at Northwest, which serves first through third grades. The new parking lot, containing about two dozen spots, has been finished on the north side of Northwest Elementary School, replacing a gravel lot. Construction has been taking place at all five buildings in the Amityville Union Free School District this summer, the first phase of the $69.9 million bond referendum that was passed by voters in March 2016. One of the major projects is the installation of security vestibules at each school. It will add a second set of locked doors at the main entrances to create another layer of safety for students and staff. Visitors would be buzzed in through the first set of doors, then have to present their identification to security staff before being allowed into the building. Demolition has already taken place and entranceways are being reconfigured with new interior doors and windows. Additional security cameras will also be installed.

The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled

with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make

attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing

with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family.

Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.
