Piping Plover Program while fostering greater public access to the outer beach. “Through careful planning and enhanced monitoring of the federally-protected plover, we were able to strike a balance to protect the plover while enhancing access to the outer beach for our four-wheel drive enthusiasts,” said County Executive Steve Bellone.

“I would like to commend all those involved in the protection efforts and also the general public for their cooperation and understanding.” When first launched in 1997, the Endangered Species Protection Program resulted in 32 pairs of plovers producing 28 fledges. This year’s numbers produced 62 pairs with 100 fledges, the highest number of fledges in the program’s history.

Now that the ﬂedglings are grown, the outer beach has been returned to full access to the public and four-wheel drive beach vehicle enthusiasts. Plover Facts · Typical clutch is four eggs with each egg being laid every other day. · Takes estimated 27 days for eggs to hatch, and additional 25 to 35 days for chicks to ﬂy. · Once hatched, chicks are mobile within hours.

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the ﬁeld. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a ﬁxture at the old Lindenhurst ofﬁce. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Adam RealMan and Coney Island USA Present: The 11th annual Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition at Sideshows by the Seashore! The strangest and most extravagant beards and moustaches descend upon Coney Island to see whose facial hair reigns supreme. Founded in 2008, the Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition has grown to become one of Coney Island’s most unique evenings of entertainment. Over the past ten years, hundreds of bearded men (and women) have competed to take home the much coveted Beard & Moustache Fez trophy and other great

prizes. “With ten events under our belt, we’re the longest running beard competition on east coast and the only one in the New York area!” Boasts Adam Realman, the competition’s producer and emcee. “And I’m thrilled to announce that punk rock legend Handsome Dick Manitoba is going to be my co-host for the second year in a row”, RealMan, emphatically states. “Last year Handsome Dick and I had such a great rapport on stage, that I had to ask him to return. We were like two Borscht Belt comedians ﬁnishing each other’s jokes. He’s a pleasure to work with.” The judges range

from writers to artists to strongmen a beer brewer. Every working family on Long Island makes a decision about child care. The Child Care Council of Suffolk’s goal is to make that decision easier. The agency works with thousands of families and child care providers every year to

ensure that working parents have access to quality child care. Rojas has extensive knowledge of the myriad issues surrounding the child care industry as wells as its critical importance to Long Island economic development and to building a successful future workforce. Prior to being named executive director, Rojas served as the Child Care

Council of Suffolk’s associate executive director as well as a consultant to the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. The Centerport resident has devoted nearly two decades working to improve policies and programs in New York that affect children and families. Prior to joining CCCS, she was vice president of Grants and Operations at the Rauch

Foundation in Garden City, where she was responsible for grant-making and dayto-day operations. From 2007 to 2012, Rojas was the deputy executive director for the Children’s Defense Fund – New York, where she managed the policy, legislative and advocacy efforts around children’s health, juvenile justice, child welfare, education and early childhood

learning. Prior to that, she served in the City of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services in various capacities, including: Family Court attorney, chief of staff and associate commissioner for the Division of Child Care and Head Start. Rojas is a member of the New York State Board of Regents Early Childhood Blue Ribbon Committee

and also serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Early Care & Learning Council. She is a graduate of Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, and holds a Juris Doctor degree from The Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Making the Most of Middle School Administrators, teachers and support staff greeted incoming seventhgraders as they attended orientation on August 23rd at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Back in June, as sixthgraders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, they made the trip a mile north to experience a typical day in the middle school. For their second visit, they were invited to orientation with their

parents to learn about the opportunities and expectations. Principal Ed Plaia reviewed the courses that they will take as seventhgraders including math, science and social studies, a double period of English, physical education and health, Spanish or French, and electives. He spoke about the eighth-grade curriculum, in which students are accelerated in math and science to earn high school credit,

and the rigorous academic demands in seventh grade to prepare for that. Mr. Plaia encouraged students to make the most out of middle school by attending extra help, joining an extracurricular activity or sports team, and making sure they are on time for their classes.
