Continued From 10 Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th. Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University. No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required. Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conﬂict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over

4,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially needed. Make a difference in our community – one phone call at a time. Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

Valhalla is 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue ﬂake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

To exercise their knowledge of Lego robotics, more than 30 fourth- through sixth graders from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in a SumoWrestling Competition on August 12th. During the district’s twoweek summer enrichment program, students learned to design and program their

Lego robots to complete tasks and navigate through different routes. As a culminating activity, students in teams of two programed their robots to compete in a sumowrestling competition. Divided into a red and blue group, each team participated in sumowrestling matches to advance in the tournament. The winning robot from the red and blue groups

went head-to-head in the final round where it was determined that students Alexander Enrique and Luca Mazzilli were the Sumo-Wrestling Robotics Champions. “I hope they understand that science and technology can be fun,” said 21st Century Community Learning Center Director Darleen Peterson.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to present local lifeguard Andrew Morrison with the Town of Babylon’s Heroism Award – the highest honor awarded to

residents. After seeing a car collide with a child on a bicycle outside of the Sawyer Avenue pool in West Babylon, Morrison hopped over the fence to help those injured by the accident. Morrison then went back to the pool to grab the defibrillator in

order to help the injured eleven-year-old boy until paramedics arrived. The boy was transported to Stony Brook Hospital where he was treated for injuries. Supervisor Schaffer and members of the Town Board applauded Andrew for his life saving actions.

Adopted by Kiwanis Continuing its community service activities, charity events and working with local youth, the Copiague Kiwanis recently adopted Kerrigan Road near Tanner Park. The Copiague Kiwanis award annual scholarships to Copiague High School

Seniors and mentor the Builders Club in the Copiague Middle School and the Key Club in the Walter G. O’Connell Memorial Copiague High School. After the highway clean-up effort, the youth volunteers were treated to a pizza party and barbeque for their dedicated service.

Councilman Tom Donnelly thanked the Kiwanis and youth volunteers for their commitment to their community and for partnering with the Town of Babylon in the joint task of keeping our roadways clean and litter free.

Summer Pages Graduate The Suffolk County Legislature’s inaugural summer Page Program concluded August 7th with a graduation ceremony held in the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium of the W.H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Fifteen high school and college students completed the internship program. “I am honored to congratulate these outstanding young people as they graduate from our Page Program,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “These students prove that millennials are anything but disengaged from public life. I’m impressed by both their enthusiasm

and professionalism, and I thank my fellow legislators for giving our Pages a substantive experience this summer.” During the twomonth program, Pages drafted and debated mock legislation, staged mock press conferences and attended workshops on topics ranging from time management to cultural intelligence. Additionally, they broke into caucuses and elected a Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer. Pages were also assigned to legislative offices throughout the county, where they assisted staff with day-to-day operations, including constituent service. “I’ve loved every minute

of the program and every person I’ve met along the way,” said Kristin Peragine of Baiting Hollow, who was assigned to the office of Clerk of the Legislature Tim Laube. “I never felt defeated or as though I couldn’t understand what was going on during a meeting. There was always a resource for me to rely on to help me further understand what was happening on a day-to-day basis at the Legislature.” While the Suffolk County Legislature will continue to welcome interns this fall, the Page Program will only be offered in the summer. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

On Thursday, the office of Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy awarded an official Proclamation to recognize Joan Travan for her exceptional contributions to the community of Suffolk. Joan Travan has been an active member of the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees for many years. For the last three years she has served as one of the association’s Vice Presidents; she also has been serving the

Union as the Medicaid Unit President for the past seven years. Her dedication does not stop there; she has also been a dedicated member and President of both the Medford Civic Association and Medford Parent Teacher Association. After nearly 25 years of public service to the community of Suffolk County, Joan Travan has decided to retire, she was promptly congratulated and honored by both Leslie and John Kennedy for her

lifetime of hard work and achievements.
