Lindy Cares Youth visited Fireman’s Park to deliver a presentation to village campers ages 10 and up. Lindy Cares Youth Coalition performed a skit about miscommunication and the campers were eager to share their personal experiences and discuss effective communication techniques to avoid misunderstandings. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation. Academic pre-schools have become a popular choice for parents hoping their children can gain that extra edge. Rather than the play-based philosophy pre-schools adhered to in the past, academic pre-schools introduce students to the rigors of the classroom. These academic pre-schools often teach math and reading. Proponents of this type of learning say that children are sponges at early ages, and the more information they can be

Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has flexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to college. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.

Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college

admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great

resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

Throughout our lives, whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc., to commemorate such events, we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months, if not years, to plan. Some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone, just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean,” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything, just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion, it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass, but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is that within three generations or less, no one will remember any of us, but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives. Amityville Board Happenings Continued From 23 6, and custodians have been working hard to get all five buildings ready. The Amityville Teachers Association will hold its Back-to-School Bash on Monday, August 29th, at 3:30 p.m., at Park Avenue,

and the Amityville Parent Teacher Council has its Back-to-School Party and Fundraiser set for Monday, September 12th, from 4-10 p.m., at Five Guys. Dr. Kelly said that the district’s calendar has been mailed home, and the electronic version

is now available on the website. She encouraged residents to look at it for other upcoming events including back-to-school nights. Board President Terry Fulton announced that Dr. Kelly’s contract has been extended through

June 30th, 2020. Dr. Kelly came to the district in 2008 as an assistant superintendent, and has been superintendent since 2014. She thanked the board for their vote of confidence and for the opportunity to continue to lead the district.

The board of education will interview two candidates for the vacant trustee seat on August 29th. Fulton said that if there is consensus among the six board members, they would appoint a person to the Board instead of holding a

special election. The board approved the appointment of several new teachers, support staff, mentors and coaches for the 2016-2017 school year, and hired Robyn Santiago as the Park Avenue principal.
