Started in 1975, Birch Family Services is a NYC nonprofit with a team of more than 3,000 teachers, therapists, social workers, psychologists, nurses, residence counselors, administrators, board members, and family members. The mission of Birch Family Services is to provide the finest education, habilitation, and residential services to people with autism and other developmental disabilities and to help their families overcome the lifelong obstacles they face in raising children with special needs. By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone
asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32â€? becomes “I’ll be 33,â€? and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying‌ You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,
there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present� it is. Happy “Day� to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to thank NBA Champion Danny Green for his generous efforts in beautifying his hometown community. A traffic triangle located at the intersection of Belmont Avenue, which Danny’s Team Green already sponsors through the Town’s Adopt-AHighway program, and Wyandanch Avenue has been decorated with paintings, shrubbery, perennials, sod and irrigation due to Green’s advocacy. Town officials presented Danny with a special proclamation thanking him for his continued
dedication to giving back to the community and wished him well in his upcoming NBA season. Danny Green, a member of the San Antonio Spurs 2014 NBA Finals championship team, was a two-sport athlete at North Babylon High School, where he played both basketball and football before transferring to St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset his sophomore year. Green then enrolled to the University of North Carolina where he ended his undergraduate stay by bringing the NCAA Division I championship to Chapel Hill in 2009. Following his NCAA success, Green was selected in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers before becoming a member of the Spurs. He then went on to make back-to-

One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean. We never know on what shore the ripples will land and what effect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you never really know how great of an effect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our lives every day.

Youth Empowerment Seminar Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended “The Goals and Success Seminar” on Monday, August 10th, at the Wyandanch Public Library. The Wyandanch Public Library, along with other community agencies, partnered with the Suffolk County Department of Labor to provide youths with summer and seasonal jobs. Over 50 at-risk teens from the Wyandanch community were in attendance. “Always look ahead of you and not behind,” Sylvia Archibald, Director of the Wyandanch Public Library
advised the students. “Have faith in yourself, and you will be amazed at what you can achieve. Success may not always be easy but it will be worth it.” The event was organized by Wyandanch Public Library employee and former North Babylon resident Cyrinia Prendergast. “Growing up, I was able to have the opportunity to have my mother and friends speak to me about goals, and I realized that not everyone is able to have that chance,” said Prendergast. “Therefore, I was inspired to put this event together for these students. I really just wanted to give
back to the Wyandanch community.” Ms. Prendergast is currently a student at North Carolina University. “I applaud the initiative of Cyrinia Prendergast, Wyandanch Public Library Director Sylvia Archibald and all those whose efforts made today’s event possible,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “It was very important to me to be able to speak to this group of young people and highlight the importance of staying on the right track and preparing for obstacles and challenges they may face on the way to achieving their goals.”
