90th Birthday Party!

Mrs. Caterina Pinello of Lindenhurst recently celebrated her 90th birthday at Mama’s Restaurant in Copiague. On had to celebrate were her five children - Mateo, Gaetano (Tommy), Anthony, Josephine and Nancy, daughter-in-laws Franca and Grace, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Caterina was sent to hospice in November but thankfully has survived and is doing well today. She truly enjoyed her special day surrounded by her loving family.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Back to School Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Scott Martella Back-to-School Drive in partnership with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to provide supplies for underprivileged students before the start of the school year. The donation drive will be held in memory of Scott Martella, the former Communications Director for County Executive

Bellone who was tragically killed last year in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. “Scott was a one of a kind public servant who deeply cared about giving back to those less fortunate in the community,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As a former Smithtown School Board member, Scott had a passion for giving students the tools they needed to

Young Rocket Scientists two-liter soda bottles, salt, water and an air pump to test their rocket design during launch. Throughout the summer, students learned about the forces of gravity and motion and aerodynamic design while also testing air pressure and how it would affect how far their rockets would travel.

Fourth-grade rocket scientists worked in groups to design their own rockets, which were then ignited and flew high in the sky for all to see. Parachutes helped guide the rockets back to the ground and students tested how their designs fared compared to YOUNG ROCKET SCIENTISTS - Fourth- and fifth-graders who participated in Copiague School District’s summer program became young rocket scientists when their classmates. they launched their rockets during the program’s culminating activity. Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated. But first, you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.

There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body, and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased memebers of the Catholic Church. Nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.
