TAKING FLIGHT - Fourth graders in the elementary summer school program at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District are using their STEM skills to design and test their own rocket ships. They were tasked with creating their own unique ship out of a soda bottle. After the design phase was complete, the students headed out to the field behind the school for launch. Among the topics that children chose were biomes, body systems, human rights, natural disasters and the solar system. Each group had to create a board game that resembled the style of existing popular board games. Every student in the group had a roll including the story teller, the rule maker, the question maker and the designer. With support from Mr. Quinn, children created their game pieces on iPads, which then came to fruition using the 3D printer in the library. The group that created a game about biomes made pieces to look like different animals. Students also used a Selphy photo printer to add visual elements to their games. The Charity of the Month for August is:

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. However, although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, the cremation is to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason creamation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains”. The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains,” as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to conact one of the priests if you have further questions about it. Getting Artsy This Summer During the summer months, students enrolled in Copiague School District’s elementary summer program have been getting creative during arts and crafts time. Incoming kindergarten students and kindergarten students practiced using

primary colors to make a beautiful rainbow. During the second week, students made jellyfish using tissue paper, ribbon and googly eyes. During the third week, the class read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and students had fun making their own hungry caterpillars.

They used paper plates, markers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and rhinestones to create their caterpillars. Students in grades 1-3 used different materials to create fun and crafty projects. During the first week, students made flowers using sponge paint, paper plates and

craft sticks. During the second week, students created tie dye butterflies by making beautiful patterns on coffee filters and spraying the filters with water. The colors blended together to create a tie dye effect. In week three, the students created rainbow character clouds, filled

with positive, uplifting words that describe who they are. Fourth and fifth grade students have been learning about space, gravity and rocket ships this summer. During arts and crafts, they have been using their creativity to make their own unique

solar systems filled with different planets, rocket ships, stars and aliens. Students used watercolor paint to create their planets and decorated the solar system using colored pencils, glitter and construction paper.
