Shining Studios is a Long Island-based theatre organization that offers classes in film acting, singing, dancing, and musical theater to children of all ages. Classes are offered on a semester basis beginning the week of September 21st and they feature guest speakers and directors. Each class culminates in a special performance by the participants at the end of the semester. Rocket Science The countdown was on as 36 fourth-grade students in the Copiague School District summer enrichment program put their knowledge of rocketry to the test during a rocket launch experiment

on August 5th. In the weeks leading up to the experiment, students were educated on the scientific method and Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion. While learning about the history

and features of a rocket, students discussed various aerodynamic forces including thrust, gravity, drag and lift. To develop a better understanding of how a rocket functions, teachers Maureen

Gaertner, Christina Luft and Marie Przybyszewski led students in engaging activities including ﬂying kites and air powered rockets. In addition, the fourth-graders studied the gravitational pull that occurs after a parachute opens in the air. For the launch, each student assembled a

12-piece Estes model rocket. Using an Estes rocket launch pad and rocket engine igniters, students counted down from five and launched their rockets up to heights of 1,100 feet. Following liftoff, students and faculty members watched as the rocket penetrated through the air and the parachute

opened, allowing the rocket to ﬂoat to the ground. “The idea behind summer school here in Copiague is that it is project-based learning,” said Gaertner. “We are trying to give the students experiences that enrich them.”

Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt

to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. Continued From 11 donate double red cells – a process where two units of red cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor – where available. “Summer blood shortages are not uncommon, but they can be prevented when generous volunteers roll up their sleeves to help save lives,” said Nick Gehrig, senior communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “Many donors have already given this summer. We’re now asking donors who haven’t donated, and those who are eligible again, to make an appointment to give now to help ensure blood products are available for patients.” Platelets and type AB plasma also needed Platelet donors and those with type AB blood are also continually needed to help ensure patients receive the

lifesaving blood products they need. Platelets – a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone narrow recipients – must be transfused within five days of donation, so donations are constantly needed. Donors with type AB blood are urged to give blood or platelets to restock the plasma supply. Type AB donors have the universal plasma type, which can be given to patients of all blood types. Individuals who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again and help patients like an expectant mother at a Red Crosssupported hospital who is currently receiving nearly 100 units of blood products a week until she delivers. Behind the tree, the bay stretches wide, Like bands of elastic expanding, swelling, connecting land to sea. This solitary tree is abandoned; No bird occupies a branch Or huddles underneath its sparse stems for shelter. All alone in its secluded posture it remains, With only the visiting clouds illuminating its background; Preparing their descent into dusk, Allowing filaments of egg blue sky to filter through, Igniting the landscape in luminous rosy gilded hues. There isn’t any law in New York State that requires the use of a casket for cremation. There isn’t any law that prohibits a funeral home from renting a casket for cremation. If you have been told this, you have been misled. It is the cemeteries and crematories that require a rigid receptacle for cremation. The reason the crematories require a rigid receptacle for cremation is so their personnel do not have to directly handle human remains. Being a funeral director for over 30 years, it never made a great deal of sense to me to purchase an expensive casket for cremation. Since I purchased my first funeral home, I have been renting caskets for cremation. In 1990 the casket companies finally developed a casket within a casket that could be rented for cremation. The interior casket is constructed of fiberboard and has the same type of interor as a regular casket. The exterior casket is constructed of solid oak. The rental unit is identical in appearances to that of an oak casket that costs $2500. The rental casket is used for the visitation at the funeral home; it is taken to church for services and no one else other than the family knows the casket is rented rather than purchased. After all the services are completed, the interior casket slides out from the exterior casket for the cremation. The cost for use of the rental casket is as follows: $400 for the interior casket which is cremated and $400 for the rental of the exterior casket. Of course, you can also purchase an inexpensive casket for a cremation for approximately the same amount of money, or you can purchase a casket that has been designed for cremation which is as expensive as all the other caskets. In my opinion the rental casket offers the greatest value. If you have any questions please contact us at 957-0300.
