Get Cracking Lobster Night Is Back

The Village of Amityville’s parking amnesty has been extended to August 19th, 2016. In the interest of code enforcement, public safety, and to increase the flow of non-tax revenue, the Village of Amityville Board of Trustees will offer an amnesty program for open parking summonses returnable to the Village Justice Court and issued between January 1st, 2004 and May 31st, 2016. The Village Court had been authorized to accept payments during the period of July 1st, 2016 through July 31st, 2016 at the reduced rate of 30 percent to assist qualified individuals- the deadline has now been extended to August 19th, 2016.

Memoir in the Making By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. The deceased - as sick he or she was - has no more pain or suffering, but only peace. We the survivors, are left to grieve, mourn and cope with our severe loss. The funeral, whether it is a traditional full service funeral or a direct cremation or burial with a memorial service, should be a personal tribute to the life of the deceased which helps you remember the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth in this world to you and your family and friends. You may wish to formulate in your mind those aspects of your loved one which you would like to be remembered. You should think about what you would like written in the obituary. You may wish to discuss with us how we can help you remember your loved one by displaying pictures at the funeral home or during the memorial service.

TAKING PRIDE IN WHERE WE LIVE WE have a problem and I’m not sure how to fix it. DO YOU? Last week, I drove through Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Every residential community was CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. I’ve been in Arizona, the Carolina’s and Indiana. ALL CLEAN. Saturday, I turned off the Southern State Parkway (the Route 109 exit), and there is TRASH EVERYWHERE. I drove down Wellwood Avenue, and there is TRASH EVERYWHERE. I drove on Montauk Highway toward Babylon Village and witnessed a young person throw a bag of GARBAGE out the car window. A minute later, they threw out their drink cup. I pulled up next to the driver’s window and told the parents what their kids had just done. They told me to go @%&#! and to mind my own business. So I ask YOU, how do we fix this growing problem? Understandably, we are hesitant to approach a litterbug because you never know how they are going to respond. Obviously, they’re not right and could care less. We could blame the parents, but many of the parents (like the ones I encountered) are just as bad. There is only so much our politicians and law enforcement can do.

I personally am making a daily commitment to pick up a minimum of “JUST ONE” piece of trash every day that is not my own. I may end up picking up more than “JUST ONE,” but I am pledging to pick up at least “JUST ONE” piece of trash. So I ask YOU, can you pick up “JUST ONE”?
