The Charity of The Month for July is:

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

To the Class of 2020: congratulations, you’ve made it to this point. Keep going, and remember no matter what you’re going through, how dark it may get, and just how badly you want to give up, you are never out of the fight.” Valedictorian Melanie Garcia reflected on the past, present and future for the graduating class. “The past holds our mistakes, growth, but also memorable moments,” she said. “We all entered high school with the very same goal: graduating. After finally graduating, some of us will want to forget their past here, but I urge you all not to forget your roots. The present is the only moment we can modify with our actions and decisions. At the moment, we are experiencing a global change caused by a pandemic. For us to secure a peaceful future, the actions we perform in the present must send a clear statement, one that emphasizes the change that must occur in order for this world to be just. The idea of the future brings upon goals we wish to accomplish, dreams we wish to become reality, and the hope to live in a kind world. Class of 2020, I encourage you to be as memorable as this year has been so far. Leave evidence that you existed; be on the right side of history and make a change that is unforgettable. Looking forward, much is expected of you and I have great confidence in your abilities. This year, we have all been faced with many challenges, but those challenges are actually what you unites us in many ways. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated the successes of the Class of 2020 with three commencement ceremonies held on the school’s football field on June 26. Proudly donning their caps and gowns, students marched onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance.” Senior Class President Nicole Hernandez led the Pledge of Allegiance before Board of Education President Brian Sales offered his words of congratulations on behalf of the board. “Remember that your life today is a result of your attitudes and choices in the past; your life tomorrow will be results of your attitudes and choices you make today and every day moving forward,” he said. “Be a lifelong learner. Learning creates opportunities and knowledge is power.” Copiague School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon addressed the soon-to-be graduates and reflected on their time in Copiague. “The Class of 2020 is the class we will always remember,” she said. “You left school on March 13 thinking you were going home for the weekend. Never at anticipating that today would be the next time you came back to school. When I think about this graduating class, I think about all the wonderful accomplishments you’ve had during your years at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. You’ve excelled in the classrooms, on the field, on the stage and everywhere in between. You’ve certainly left an indelible mark on the high school. You’re to be commended for all the positive energy, effort, flexibility and dedication you put into everything you’ve accomplished while you were here. “ Salutatorian Marvin Pineda Lobo offered his classmates a few words of advice for the next chapter in their lives. “In a life of striving to achieve success, I hope that along the way you leave an

The Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation (LDC) has approved a $100,000 endowment to support the local art community as well as proposals to beautify Babylon. In partnership with Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. (BACCA), the first $20,000 of the endowment will focus on projects that renew the beauty of the Town’s downtowns as well as programs that are aimed at bringing the community together. The funding is part of the Town’s Babylon is Back initiative which serves to provide businesses with additional support as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have a strong arts community within the Town of Babylon that is eager to get started on many public beautification projects,” said Matthew McDonough, Director of the Babylon is Back Program. “Our partnership with BACCA will not only improve the overall aesthetics of our Town, but the projects that this money will fund will attract visitors to our area and help businesses rebound from the impacts of the COVID-19 shutdown.” With the LDC’s backing, BACCA will host several art projects across the Town of Babylon over the coming months in partnership with local artists, organizations, and small businesses. These projects include outdoor painting classes, a drive-in concert featuring local musicians, murals and other public art installations to be featured in a “Babylon Together Arts Trail.” One of the first mural efforts will take place at the HRHCare Health Center in Wyandanch

For several weeks we have been discussing how to create a more meaningful funeral service by making it more personal. I am talking about the entire funeral process not just the actual funeral service. You can personalize the music during the wake if you so desire. I knew one family which at the beginning and end of each visitation for about five minutes played Frank Sinatra singing “I Did It My Way” loud enough for everyone to hear and by the end of the second visitation everyone sang along. The deceased was a life-long fan of Sinatra and endured and conquered many hardships by doing things her way. Another family redecorated my chapel with deceased’s artwork. I have also assisted families in arranging personal memorial services in their own home or restaurants where friends gathered to reflect and share memories. My point in that a funeral should reflect the life of your loved one. Whether the service is a tradional funeral with a wake, funeral mass and an interment or the service is a memorial mass or memorial funeral service which takes place after the cremation or interment. Factors To Consider Before Reopening Small business owners have to make many difficult decisions due to the fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak. Perhaps no decision is more difficult for small business owners than when to reopen their businesses. The decision regarding when to reopen a business requires business owners to consider a host of factors, many of which may be beyond their control. • Local guidelines: While it’s every small business owner’s goal to get back to work or return to normalcy as quickly as possible, that decision is largely up to local government officials. Many areas are taking a gradual approach to reopening their economies while also noting that they could implement new closures if virus numbers start to increase. Business owners must familiarize themselves with their local government guidelines to determine where they fall in the reopening pecking order. •Long-term consequences: Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly sounded the alarm in regard to lifting social distancing measures, including guidelines governing non-essential businesses, too early. Such officials warn that the long-term effects could be considerably more devastating from both a public health and economic standpoint than the short-term effects many businesses have already endured. Business owners must take the potential long-term consequences of reopening into consideration when trying to decide if the time is right to reopen. • Vendor availability: The interconnected nature of the economy has never been more apparent than over the last couple of months. Business owners who want to

reopen must determine if the vendors they rely on are reopening as well. If not, finding new vendors may not be as simple as opening up the phone book. Some vendors are now requiring cash-on-delivery, which can pose additional problems for small business owners who have generated little to no revenue since the outbreak. The status of existing contracts with vendors also must be considered before business owners can begin new relationships with new vendors. • Safety: The safety of employees and customers is another factor to consider before reopening. Some staff members who have been laid off or furloughed may not be comfortable coming back to work, while customers also may be hesitant to be out in public. •Post-pandemic consumers: Various economists have noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to change consumer habits. While everyone is itching to get out and about, consumers have been forced to adopt new habits while social distancing, and economists predict many of those new habits will become permanent. Small businesses may have to cater to consumers who now prefer products be shipped to their homes, which may require small business owners to more fully embrace e-commerce. Now is a great time for small business owners to determine if they’re ready to make that transition. If not, delaying reopening until e-commerce capabilities are stronger may be the wisest choice for small business owners. Every small business owner wants the economy to reopen. But each small business owner must consider an assortment of factors before deciding to reopen.
