With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for ﬂakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

On July 7th, the Amityville School District’s summer enrichment program welcomed special guest New York State Lt. Gov. Kathleen C. Hochul in an effort to promote reading. During her visit to Northwest Elementary School, Hochul presented 500 books to the district, courtesy of Scholastic, for students of many different reading levels. As part of Scholastic’s summer reading challenge, “Be a Reading Superhero,” the company is giving away more than 20,000 books this summer throughout

the country, and Amityville was selected as New York State’s recipient. Hochul also spent time telling the students about her job and reading “Julius,” written by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Dav Pilkey, about a girl and her new large pet pig. She reminded the students how important it is to read during the summer to keep their minds sharp. “We were thrilled to have the lieutenant governor visit our students in our summer enrichment program and very grateful to her for her very generous gift to our students of

books from Scholastic,” Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said. “The students will make great use of the books throughout the summer and during the school year.” The summer enrichment program, housed at Northwest, has approximately 550 students who will be entering kindergarten through seventh grade. The program is held every Monday through Thursday in July, and includes reading, writing, math and STEAM activities.

Skin Cancer Screening Senator Michael Venditto recently teamed up with the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC) and the Town of Babylon to sponsor a free skin cancer screening program at

Tanner Park in Copiague to help protect residents from skin cancer. “Getting screened is critically important to ensure that skin cancer is detected early and treated effectively. With
