Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

Local Restaurateur Provides Assistance to Restaurant Owners on Effective Business Rollout As part of the Babylon Is Back Program the Town of Babylon and local Restaurant Consultant, Matt Demar, have teamed up to provide restaurants, bars and other local retail shops with reopening mentoring services. These services are aimed at assisting these types of businesses to successfully navigate through the reopening process to maximize their earning potential while remaining in compliance with recommended safety guidelines. “Bars and restaurants make a significant percentage of our local economy as they collectively employ thousands of people and get residents and visitors to patronize other businesses in the area,” said Town of
Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The economic ripple effect of bars and restaurants cannot be understated, which is why we are proud of the contributions Matt Demar has and continues to make to help this important economic sector.” The Town of Babylon— in partnership with the Babylon IDA and the Town’s local village mayors—announced its streamlined permitting process for restaurant owners to offer outside dining to patrons. Joined by local restauranteurs, the Town announced the changes made to make the form simpler as well as the amendments made to expedite the approval process. The purpose of the partnering with Mr. Demar
is to make local restaurant owners aware of the streamlined, free process so they are positioned to take advantage of indoor and outdoor dining pursuant to Phase II and III state guidelines. The services provided through the mentoring program consist of reimagining the bar/ restaurants available space to make way for operating with social distancing guidelines in place. In addition to help solidifying the physical setup of the individual bar/restaurant, Matt Demar is also providing businesses with marketing advice on how to effectively communicate with customers the steps that have been taken to ensure their safety while also enjoying a night out.

Copiague Opens Lottery For UPK Program Copiague School District has been funded to provide limited seating for a full-day universal pre-K program for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is offered free to Copiague residents for the entire school year through a lottery selection process. Contingent upon New York State funding, in September and continuing throughout the school year, fouryear-old children will be able to attend preschool five days per week for five hours per day. No transportation is
provided. To qualify, the child must be four years old on or before Dec. 1, 2020. To schedule an appointment for the lottery registration, please complete the online UPK lottery appointment request form. It is available on the district website: w w w. c o p i a g u e . k 1 2 . ny.us. If you need assistance completing the form, please call (631) 842-4015, ext. 510. Following the submission of the online form, a Copiague Public Schools registrar will
contact you to make an appointment to register your child for the lottery. All appointment requests must be made by July 17, 2020, to be guaranteed entry to the lottery. A random drawing will be conducted for available UPK seats at the district’s three UPK sites. Lottery results will be posted to the district website by 3 p.m. on July 30. Families will be notified by mail if they have received a seat in the UPK program, or if they have been placed on the UPK program waiting list.

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Two Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a wake and church service or whether you were planning a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel, from all our experiences, those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into you and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers, the family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church, during the funeral, or at the memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before for several reasons, the most important being the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Copiague Board Of Education Elects 2020-21 Officers Copiague School District’s Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting via teleconference on July 7. Brian J. Sales was unanimously elected and sworn in to serve as president of the board of
education for his second consecutive term in that seat. Kenneth Urban and Rosemary Natoli were elected and sworn in to serve as vice president and second vice president, respectively. District Clerk Mary Ellen Ruppert swore
