One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean. We never know on what shore the ripples will land and what effect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you never really know how great of an effect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 gift from the Treiber Family Foundation to support the Council’s Help, Hope and Healing campaign. This campaign commemorates LICADD’s 60 years of providing needed programs and services to the Long Island community. Funding for this campaign will help to support Chemical Dependency Interventions for families who are unable to afford the service; the Student Assistance Program that provides prevention and education information to grades K-12 and technology upgrades and enhancements to support the increasing demand for services. In 1956 R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision to

support individuals who were struggling with alcoholism. R. Brinkley Smithers, marshaled his personal and family fortune into the nation’s largest foundation in support of alcoholism research and treatment. Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently unveiled the winners of the annual Gurwin Photo Contest, which are now on permanent display at the 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation facility. The striking photos are a signature element of the warm and welcoming environment at Gurwin. According to Herbert H. Friedman, Gurwin Center Executive Vice President/ CEO, the contest began more than 23 years ago with two objectives: to decorate the new facility, and to give local photographers an opportunity to show off their work. “Our contest has a loyal following, and most of the photographers understand that their photo does more than win them a prize,” he said. “When a photo is chosen, it is not only well-done technically and pleasing in subject matter, but also it is selected with our residents in mind. Knowing that it will bring joy to others for years to come is often cited by photog¬raphers as the main reason they enter our contest, regardless of the actual prize won.” This year, more than 850

Suffolk Warns of Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity. The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials:

Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email. Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying. They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money. Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make

it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a telltale sign of a scam. Surf Week New York Will Skudin, 5th-ranked big wave surfer in the world and the founder of New York Surf Week, announced recently that this year’s festivities will be the biggest and best yet. The eagerly-anticipated event - which honors the memory of Long Beach surf legend George “Geeza” Geiser - has always helped shine a spotlight on New York’s emerging surf scene, but this year, said Skudin, attendees will enjoy an expanded itinerary of surf and skate contests, a new Hurley Surf Center, nonprofit surf outings, film premiers, raffles, kids activities and games, a boardwalk vending village and two NYSEA summer blow-out parties for people of all ages. Surf Week 2016 will

start July 13th and run through July 17th. This year’s centerpiece, the NYSEA Open surf contest, will be held on the most promising wave day of the event. Because of the fluid start time, competitors and the public will follow nysurfweek.com via email and social media to stay updated on conditions and potential start times. This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium

place in previous years. Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. (Remember: a six-foot wave is double overhead when you’re three feet tall.) Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of

experienced instructors. Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week. Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park. Another improved

feature of 2016 Surf Week will derive from the decision to move the annual concert and skateboard contest to Long Beach’s new skate park. While previous skate showdowns were entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re stoked to bring a real skate contest to a real skate park.” The Bowl & Street Jam will be held July 16th with the juniors contest starting at 6 p.m., and the pro event following at 8 p.m. Accompanying the skating will be a number of bands including local reggae standouts Jahstix.

Putting the finishing touches on this year’s event will be a pair of parties on July 16th and 17th. The first event will be open to all ages and will be held between 6 and 10:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Yacht Club. The familyfriendly affair will feature dunk tanks, kids’ activities, popcorn machines, raffles and music. The following night there will be a 21+ blowout summer bash at Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill (15 Railroad Pl., Island Park.) True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.
