The Amityville Union Free School District was one of 38 school districts selected by the New York State Education Department to receive a Student Support and Academic Enrichment grant. The district is getting $889,241 in federal funds through the Every Student Succeeds Act for technology enhancement. Amityville students will engage in a technologysupported, team-building approach in which they will participate as designers, engineers, documenters and strategists to create board games and video games based on informational and fictional texts selected from the existing curriculum. A focus on STREAM — science, technology, reading, engineering, the arts and math — will engage teachers in creating and facilitating hands-on rigorous interdisciplinary

units of study with their students. Teachers will learn to use online support tools such as coding platform kidOYO. Google Classroom will be used both as a professional learning network for teacher communication and ongoing collaboration, as well as a cloud-based curriculum platform to scaffold student learning from grade to grade. Students will transition from the board game design process in elementary schools to robotics, coding and video game development at the middle school level. This will provide opportunities for school-to-career pathways in advanced coding, visual media and mobile app design at the high school level. In addition, teacher specialists supporting ENL and students with disabilities will learn to use visual media, such

21st Century Learning as Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality tools, to make science and social studies curriculum come alive, while enriching vocabulary development and oral language fluency. The district will continue its partnership with Digital Age Learning, an educational technology consulting company, to support these new initiatives. “The district is proud to be awarded the Student Support and Academic Enrichment grant,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly. “We will utilize these funds to create a personalized learning experience in essential 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity to support college and career readiness across all content areas.”

For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.

I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity.

Sports Camps Feature Skills More than 100 youngsters kicked off their summer by getting some exercise at the Amityville Union Free School District’s sports skills camps. Held in the high school gymnasium and on the athletic fields, students entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades were able to choose between basketball, flag football, soccer and volleyball. The free eight-day program was open to any child living within the district boundaries and included breakfast, lunch and three hours of sports

instruction from coaches and teachers. A typical day included lessons and drills followed by scrimmage games in which the young athletes could put into practice their new skills. Amityville Memorial High School boys varsity soccer coach Mike Abbondondolo explained that this year’s soccer camp had a World Cup theme, so the children played games representing different countries. Girls varsity volleyball coach Julie Dexter said that participants in her camp worked on skills such

as serving, hitting and passing. Allan Dodson-Isabel, who will be entering fourth grade at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, has aspirations to play in the NBA so he participated in the basketball camp. At minimum, he said he wants to play for Amityville’s varsity team and win a state title like the local players he looks up to. “I like basketball and I wanted to learn more,” Allan said. “I want to be an MVP.”

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Copiague School District has named Kristina Biamonte as principal of Deauville Gardens West Elementary School, effective July 1st. With more than 13 years of experience in education, Biamonte began her teaching career in Far Rockaway and the New York City Department of

Education, teaching grades 1-2 and 4-5. Biamonte also served as a grade team leader, math coach, staff developer and assistant principal. She joined the Copiague School District in 2015 as assistant principal at Susan E. We feel from all our experiences those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into you and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers, the family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral or at the memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before for several reasons, the most important being the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Board Ofﬁcers Named The Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education hosted its reorganization meeting on July 2nd, with re-elected trustees Juan Leon and Jeannette Santos sworn into office to begin their new three-year terms. The board returned the same leadership for the 2018-19 school year, with Carolyn Dodd elected president, Mr. Leon selected as first vice president and Laura Pawlewicz chosen as second vice president. They also appointed Barbara Miller as the new district clerk. As an annual tradition, Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly took the oath of office. The regular business meeting followed, which included a presentation by the district’s architectural and construction management firms on the planned addition and

renovations to Amityville Memorial High School. Work is expected to begin before the school year begins and last approximately two years. It is part of the $69.9 million capital project approved by voters in March 2016. The addition will feature a new gymnasium and locker rooms, science labs, classrooms and expansion to the cafeteria. Board members got a look at the interior and exterior finishes that will be used, which will be based upon the school colors, red and gray. The outside will consist of gray brick, complimented with red brick. Red panels will be used above the gym lobby entrance, shaped to resemble an “A.” Carpet tiles for the renovated library will have red and gray patterns, and lightweight furniture, that can be easily moved to

create small- and largegroup meeting spaces, will also follow the color scheme. Once the new wing opens, the existing gymnasium will be converted into two large music rooms, with space for about 150 students each. Instrument music lockers will be a cherry red color. A new corridor will be added, which will have light gray ceramic wall tiles, and one of the current locker rooms will be turned into two art rooms. Other projects this summer include the installation of air conditioning in large common spaces at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School, and the installation of new windows at the middle school.
