The opening was well attended by community residents, city officials and fellow martial artists. Black Belts Eddie Bussie and Kemoni Francis dazzled the audience with expert displays of weapons and forms. The evening was capped off with a special ceremony. Grandmaster Clark promoted senior student Gregory Winborne to the rank of 7th degree Senior International Master Instructor. Much success to the new branch school.

Thirty-five students in royal blue caps and gowns proceeded proudly into the gym at James E. Allen Jr./Sr. High School June 15th for commencement exercises. Family and friends applauded the graduates, who hail from 17 Long Island school districts. The morning ceremonies included keynote addresses by former New York Islander Clark Gillies and News 12 reporter Ken Grimball, students leading the Honor Guard and a moving performance by the school’s Rising Star Chorus. Hockey Hall of Famer Gillies told the students that when he was young, he wasn’t sure what his future would be and that help from others along the way contributed to his successes. That help, he said, is one of the reasons he has dedicated his post-hockey life to serving others, particularly children in need. “Here I see a group of very determined kids and they’ve worked very hard to get where they are today,” said Gillies. “And to the parents, keep on working hard too because your children are as proud of you as you are of

them.” Grimball shared some advice. “There are many twists and turns in life and you have to keep looking ahead to find your way. You’ll all be successful just by trying.” Taking their turn at the podium were student speakers Michael Guerin and Julius Townsend. They said: “We have enjoyed many new experiences here. We have learned to work in the community and with each other. We have many friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.” The ceremony concluded with the traditional turning of the tassels to signify graduation. James E. Allen Jr./Sr. High School, part of Western Suffolk, serves students ages 12 through 21 who present a range of disabilities and require intensive support. Classroom instruction incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards, and major emphasis is on developing life skills so students may be successfully placed in a supportive work environment upon graduation.

The Next Step The Copiague School District celebrated the academic milestones of its fifth-grade students during Class Day Moving Up ceremonies held at their respective schools on June 16th and 17th. Administrators, family, faculty, friends and invited guests came together to recognize the graduating Class of 2016 at Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley elementary schools. During the ceremonies, students were honored for their outstanding academic achievements, citizenship and leadership. Awards for academic excellence in core subject areas, as well as presidential education

awards, were bestowed upon deserving fifthgraders. The students were treated to words of encouragement and congratulatory remarks from their fellow classmates as well as their respective principals. In between award presentations, students demonstrated their talents and entertained the audience by performing musical selections. During her address to the fifth-graders at Deauville Gardens East and Great Neck Road, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon advised them to take advantage of the opportunities that are afforded to them during the next phase of their

careers in the Copiague school system. “Everyone sitting in this room can be whatever they choose to be,” said Dr. Bannon. “However, you can’t do it by sitting back and letting life pass you by. Build on what you started at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School. This was the first step, and you are ready for the next step, which is middle school. Sunshine of My Life We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

O’Connell Copiague High School gymnasium, eighth-grade students from Copiague Middle School received their diplomas of completion during a moving up ceremony held on June 22nd. Among family, friends, students, administrators, faculty and members of the board of education, Assistant Principal and the evening’s Master of Ceremonies Michael Ferretti officially began the event with an introduction of welcome remarks. Following the playing of The StarSpangled Banner by the sixth- and seventh-grade band, arranged by Andy Clark, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon congratulated the students for reaching this stage in their educational careers as well as offered some keen advice as they transition to high school. “Your middle school teachers have prepared you well for the high school classes you are going to take, and the high school teachers are ready to take you to the next level academically,” said Dr. Bannon. “If you continue to put hard work and effort into your school work, you will be successful in high school.” In addition to her words of encouragement, Dr. Bannon challenged the students to branch out and be active in the school clubs, music programs and athletics that will be available to them in high school. During her address as class representative,

To celebrate Flag Day on June 14th, secondgrade students in Ashley Marrazzo’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District visited kindergartners in Natalia Brite’s class to sing patriotic songs and complete a holiday craft. Leading up to the day, students in their respective classes learned about the importance of the holiday and what the stars

and stripes on the flag represent. In the holiday spirit, students arrived to school dressed in red, white and blue. Working in pairs, second-graders helped the kindergartners create an American flag using construction paper, scissors, glue and a white crayon to draw the stars. In union, the students sang songs including You’re a Grand Old Flag and God Bless the U.S.A.

while they proudly waved their American flags in the air. Three secondgraders made their way to the front of the classroom where they explained why they are proud to be an American. To conclude the activity, the second-graders and kindergartners enjoyed interacting with one another while eating a special snack.

One misconception of people who prepay for funeral arrangements without guaranteed pricing is that everything is paid for and that the prices would not increase. There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral homes do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increases in cash advances. completion of their careers as Copiague Eagles. Following the advancement of colors and playing of the national anthem, performed by the concert band, graduates were treated to congratulatory remarks and sage advice from Board of

Education President Brian J. Sales and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon, as they prepare for the next chapter in their lives. “Each of you has left an indelible imprint on Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School,” said Dr. Bannon.
