The 238 third-graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District completed another step in their educational journeys when they were recognized for their achievements at the moving up ceremony on June 21st. Principal Kathleen Hyland thanked her first set of graduates for welcoming her with open arms and smiling faces to the school back in September. Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire
Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Middle school now awaits the 207 students who graduated from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. The sixthgraders were recognized at a moving up ceremony on June 22nd. Principal Robyn Santiago said that while they have great achievements to celebrate, they should strive to do even better next year. She reminded the youngsters that they don’t always have to follow the crowd and
should always make good choices, even when no one is looking. “You are very special to me and very dear to my heart as you are my first sixth-grade graduates from Park Avenue,” Ms. Santiago said. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said their high school graduation in six years is a lot closer than it seems. She encouraged them to start thinking about college now and putting in the hard work that is required to reach their goals. Middle
school, she said, will offer numerous opportunities to get involved in clubs and athletics, and take challenging courses. The sentiments were echoed by National Junior Honor Society President Bryanna Leguizamon, who said there is a place for everyone at the middle school. Assistant Principal Dennis Ricci invited Park Avenue’s newest graduates to come back to the school from time to time and share their successes.
A Class of Many Firsts A trend-setting class graduated from Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District, and they did so at the place where they will spend the next three years of their educational journey. During the ninthgrade awards ceremony at Amityville Memorial High School on June 22nd, Principal Edward Plaia reviewed all the “firsts” that the class experienced. They were the first ninthgraders in the district to take Advanced Placement courses, to take on a more challenging science curriculum, to build Lego robots and to experience new organizations such as the debate team and Gay Straight Alliance. “This is a group of
pioneers,” Mr. Plaia said. “You will be hearing from many of them in the future. They have helped put Amityville on the map.” Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said that as ninthgraders, their high school career has already begun. She encouraged members of the Class of 2020 to make the most of the next three years by working hard, getting involved in school activities and taking advantage of the support system that is available. The 180 members of the class received their promotion certificates. Numerous awards were also presented including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence to all students who made the High Honor Roll during every quarter of middle
school, and the President’s Award for Educational Achievement for those who consistently made the Honor Roll. Assistant Principal Kristy Pagliari and Dean of Students Earl Mitchell announced the Warriors of the Year in each subject area. Two students were named Warriors of the Year for the entire grade: Aaliyah Hunt and Jeffrey Garcia. Four students were recognized for perfect attendance this year and one, Joshua Fernandez, didn’t miss a day of school for the past three years. Mary Dexter was named the highest academic achieving student and Joseph Slack received the County Executive’s Public Service award.
